The driver of the tractor that caused the death of a 29-year-old motorcyclist on July 12 on the road between Campos and Santanyí was driving under the influence of drugs and without adequate lighting to drive at night.

The obsession with death that exists from certain interpretations of religious creeds and now from the so-called ultra-agenda – more or less stale conservatism – is indeed worrying and revealing. According to Christian religion, we would be told that our life does not belong to us, and therefore it is not right to want to die or end it when we sensibly wish. Life is a kind of divine gift, of which we are only custodians, like a wonderful book that is not ours and which we must return more or less intact to the Librarian Above. The Balearic Islands began 2026 with a 1.44% increase in births, according to data for January published this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Specifically, a total of 773 births occurred in the archipelago during the first month of the year. Of those born in January, 391 were girls and 382 were boys. The Civil Guard has found the body of a 29-year-old British woman on a large yacht moored in the port of Palma. The armed force has launched an investigation and is awaiting the autopsy results to proceed further in the case. Currently, foul play is ruled out, as no signs of violence were found on the woman's body or on the yacht. This was explained by the Civil Guard after the analysis carried out by the coroner and the force's forensics unit. According to their findings, the deceased woman was part of the yacht's crew, and a colleague raised the alarm around 9:00 p.m. on Sunday. However, the medical services dispatched to the scene could only confirm her death.

A man died on Tuesday while burning stubble, which sparked a forest fire in the Gorg Blau area, in the municipality of Escorca. The fire broke out at 12:50 p.m. and was classified as having a severity index of 0, as the agricultural burn ended up affecting forest land, according to the Mallorca Fire Department, the Balearic Institute of Nature (Ibanat), and the Regional Ministry of the Presidency. The burning had been previously reported to the Government, and firefighters from the Mallorca fire stations in Sóller and Inca, as well as personnel from Ibanat, who took charge of extinguishing the blaze, were deployed to the scene.

The Balearic Islands ended 2025 with a 2.56% decrease in the birth rate compared to the previous year, according to data published this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Specifically, a total of 8,835 births occurred in the archipelago last year, 774 of them in December alone. Of those born in the last month of the year, 399 were girls and 375 were boys. The majority of births were to mothers in the 30-34 age bracket (277), followed by those aged 35-39 (197) and 25-29 (143).

The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found Tuesday morning in an advanced state of decomposition in Cala Agulla, in the municipality of Capdepera.

The NGO Caminando Fronteras released its annual tally of deaths while attempting to reach Spanish shores, noting a significant increase in shipwrecks of boats trying to reach the Balearic Islands from Algeria. Of the 3,090 deaths recorded, a third (1,037) occurred on this route, which departs from North Africa and heads towards Formentera and Ibiza. According to the latest figures from the Ministry of the Interior, irregular migrant arrivals to Spain decreased by 40.4% compared to 2014, despite a 24.5% increase in arrivals to the Balearic Islands. We cannot turn a blind eye to such a painful reality, even though Europe has often believed that the best way to avoid encouraging these journeys is to abandon these people to their fate. We recall that high-seas rescue initiatives like the one carried out by the Catalan NGO Open Arms are condemned by the far right, from Salvini to Vox. Throughout its history, the ARA has documented some of these rescue operations with journalist Cristina Mas and photographer Xavier Bertral, and the conclusion is always the same: it is naive to think that people will not risk their lives to reach Europe by putting themselves in the hands of smuggling rings when they see no future, no opportunities, in their homeland.

The Ses Salines City Council will seek a legal formula to cover the costs of relocating the exhumed remains from the niches between numbers 49 and 198, an area at risk of collapse. Mayor Guillem Mas told ARA Baleares that this possibility will be discussed with the City Council's technical services, "and if they say it can be done," they will cover the costs, which are currently being paid by the families of the deceased.

The niches next to the chapel in the Ses Salines cemetery, specifically those from numbers 49 to 198, must be emptied because they are at risk of collapse, sources from the Salines Town Council explained to ARA Baleares. The area is currently shored up, but work cannot begin until all the remains in these niches have been exhumed.

The high temperatures recorded in August left 2,177 deaths across Spain, 71.3% more than the same period last year, according to estimates by the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII). In the Balearic Islands, the heat has killed four people.
