She was not told the cause. He was 55 years old and had heart problems. She inferred that he had suffered a sudden heart attack. She flew from Palma to Barcelona. Upon arriving at the family home, she noticed a very strange atmosphere. “People looked at me in a strange way. I thought it might be due to the shock of the death, but it didn't add up,” she recalls. A cousin pulled her aside and told her that her father had committed suicide. “I remember those days as something brutal, very shocking. The situation was chaotic because we couldn't see the body or organize the funeral, as we depended on forensic investigations. It was very painful to think about what he had done, but you also need to understand it.”

As explained this Monday by the Minister of Health, Manuela García, at a press conference, the program consists of a series of workshops in which family members will receive support. It is a complementary service to the psychological treatment already available. The protocol establishes that family members can go directly to the Red Cross or be referred by their family doctor. The goal, according to the Minister, is for people to feel supported by others who have experienced a similar situation. Investment of 30,000 euros

For his part, the president of the Red Cross in the Balearic Islands, Mateu Ballester, indicated that the agreement has an investment of 30,000 euros for a two-year term. The project focuses on peer support to accompany the grieving process through the creation and maintenance of mutual support groups, both in person and online, which will complement the care already provided in healthcare centers. As he explained, the program will allow support during the initial phase of grief—which can be addressed at the health center when deemed necessary—and subsequently offer support for a longer period through psychosocial interventions. Safe space

Facilitators will also be trained to ensure a safe and trusting environment for participants. Individual orientation and initial assessment sessions are also planned, along with telephone follow-up for those who join the groups. The agreement also includes training activities, psychosocial support, and community intervention aimed at minimizing the emotional, social, and community consequences of suicidal behavior. Talks will be organized in public spaces, and informational and guidance materials on suicidal behavior and mental health will be developed.

In recent weeks, we've had a few news stories about how "normal people" are using artificial intelligence. We already knew that students would use it to do their schoolwork, but we didn't imagine that they would start talking to them like the friends they don't have, or that they would come to feel that the confidences they can't—or don't know how to—make at home, or the secrets and concerns they have no one to confess, could reach everyone's ears. We also know that some people have used AI before committing suicide, like an American teenager, who spoke to a character from Game of Thrones who was now being rolled out by an AI company, and with whom he apparently had more than just conversations in what has been described as a 'romantic relationship'.

The average is nine people per day, 20% less than the same period in 2024. The main problems that have motivated contacting the Telephone of Hope have been anxiety, loneliness, and depression. This was explained this Monday by the president of the Telephone of Hope in the Balearic Islands, Maria Antònia Mateu, and the spokesperson for the association, Lino Salas, who took the opportunity to present the poster and slogan ("You can choose another future") for the International Day for the Prevention of Suicide (September 10), according to the ag.
