The secret behind screen use: why do parents use them with their children?

Screens are no longer just a source of occasional entertainment for children, but an everyday tool for managing household chores. In the Balearic Islands, a significant number of families admit to using digital devices to soothe children, manage boredom, or help them calm down, even before the age of six. This is one of the most relevant conclusions of the study. Analysis of screen use in children aged 0 to 6 years A study by the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), commissioned by the Regional Ministry of Education, is based on responses from 8,991 families. 91.6% of families believe their children overuse devices. According to the study, nearly half of the families admit to using screens to calm their children "sometimes" or "often," while a smaller but still significant percentage say they do so regularly. This pattern is especially prevalent among children aged 3 to 6, when device use is fully integrated into daily routines and is no longer exceptional. Boredom is another determining factor. The report shows that screens are used as an immediate resource when children don't know what to do, a function that transforms them into a tool for containment and time management. This instrumental use, aimed at facilitating coexistence and reducing conflict, coexists with the widespread perception among families that they establish rules and limits.

Grades have been posted, and the atmosphere in the classrooms is the same as every year: pent-up nerves, anticipation for Christmas, and boundless energy. Managing the final days before the holidays becomes a challenge, and traditionally, recreational activities are the norm: games, workshops, a film, or a video shared with the group. But this year, this common approach has very clear limitations. Due to stricter regulations on screen use, preschool students are not allowed to go to the cinema or watch any type of audiovisual material, not even occasionally or for recreational purposes. This is according to an email that the Pitiusas Islands' Education Inspection Department has sent to schools across the islands to remind them of the current regulations. Schools and families consulted understand and support the general ban on screen use, but believe that, in specific situations such as the last few weeks before Christmas—when children are more focused on the arrival of the Three Kings than on the regular classroom routine—these resources can have a recreational and inclusive function, such as showing videos with music or dancing in groups. "Some schools used to take them to the cinema, but they've stopped. We have to play music for them without images," says a school principal in Ibiza.

In recent years, schools in the Balearic Islands have incorporated Chromebooks into classrooms, which with the new regulations (if nothing changes) will be practically banned, with a few pedagogical exceptions. Throughout these years, it has been the Ministry itself that has urged schools to train in digitalization and adapt to new methodologies.

When school ended, it seemed like the end of the world had arrived, because we had almost three months of vacation ahead of us. This meant that when we returned to school, we looked at our classmates as if we didn't know them, or had even stopped recognizing them, because with the passing of a hundred days, at those ages, everyone changed, a little or a lot. Summer was a time out of time, a true utopia.
