The High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJIB) has recognized the legitimacy of the STEI union to challenge the pilot program for free choice of language promoted by the Ministry of Education and allows the appeal to proceed. The STEI had filed an administrative appeal against this program, which allows schools to modify the language projects approved by the school councils, but the Government had initially argued that the union lacked standing to file the lawsuit. However, the TSJIB ruling recognizes the STEI's "collective interest," since the measure directly affects teachers affiliated with the union by modifying their teaching practices and the conditions established by the schools' language projects. With this decision, the court allows the legal proceedings to continue and gives the green light to the STEI's legal battle. The union believes the pilot program was imposed on the PP by Vox's demands and lacks the support of any entity in the education sector. Furthermore, it has reiterated its demand for the program's withdrawal and for the millions of euros allocated to its implementation to be used to address real problems in the Balearic Islands' education system, such as student-teacher ratios, infrastructure, and support for diversity. According to STEI, the TSJIB's decision is an important step in defending teachers' rights and ensuring that any changes to language projects are agreed upon and respect the needs of the educational community.

The Criminal Chamber, in a ruling obtained by Europa Press, dismissed the appeal filed by the convicted man against the sentence handed down by the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJIB), which had already confirmed the conviction. in the first instance issued by the Jury Court of the Provincial Court of PalmaThe Supreme Court has upheld the 12-year prison sentence for homicide against one of the two defendants, a sentence that becomes final as no further appeals have been filed. The other defendant, on whose case the High Court did not rule, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The judges rejected the claims of the convicted killer's defense, which argued, among other things, that the rights to effective judicial protection and the presumption of innocence had been violated during the trial. Furthermore, the defense argued that insufficient evidence was presented at trial to prove that their client had been an accomplice in the homicide, which, according to their version of events, was committed by the other man in a "sudden and unexpected" manner, leaving the defendant, who was driving, powerless to intervene. At most, he added, he could have been convicted of failure to render aid, since he witnessed the events and left the victim in a dangerous situation.

The Provincial Court of Palma has sentenced a woman to 17 years in prison for killing her 91-year-old aunt and stuffing her body into a suitcase in Sineu. The defendant reached a plea agreement with the prosecution and admitted to the homicide charge, the Balearic Islands High Court (TSJIB) reported. The presiding judge of the jury trial, in a hearing held Friday morning, handed down the 17-year prison sentence and absolute disqualification from holding public office orally. The written judgment will be issued and made public in the coming days. According to the prosecution, the defendant took in her 91-year-old aunt, whom she cared for due to her progressive cognitive decline and the resulting memory lapses and difficulties walking and feeding herself. On April 14, 2024, he began to beat her "indiscriminately," sat on her, pressing his knees down on her, and stabbed her in the chest, causing her death. In an attempt to evade responsibility for these criminal acts, he tried to stage an accidental death and devised a plan to deceive both the medical services and the police. To do this, he scrubbed the floor, cleaned the blood from the furniture in the house, and placed the victim's lifeless body in a large suitcase. He then drove it to his home in Palma, from where he called the health center and emergency services, telling them that the woman had died and requesting a death certificate. The woman who confessed to the Sineu suitcase murder had already shown her willingness to reach the agreement that materialized this Friday and accepted the 17-year prison sentence requested by the prosecution. The woman agreed with the legal classification, facts, and penalties defended by the Public Prosecutor's Office and did not submit an alternative statement.

The court dismissed an appeal from a father who requested that his son receive at least 25% of his classes in Spanish at a school in Palma.
