A few days ago I attended as a member of the public the presentation of Pere Carrió's latest book, El magisteri depurat a les Illes Balears (Lleonard Muntaner, 2026). It was held in the UGT assembly hall, which was overflowing with retired teachers, women and men with many years of books, blackboards, and childhoods grown up on their shoulders who, like Pere, have endured and largely explain the educational system in the Balearic Islands.

In the last year, this group grew by 2,126 people, a 2.1% increase compared to December 2024, confirming the upward trend in self-employment in the archipelago. This growth is unevenly distributed among the islands, with Mallorca accounting for nearly 79% of the self-employed, with 76,001 professionals. It is followed by Menorca, with 14,102 members; Ibiza, with 7,612; and Formentera, with 928. This snapshot demonstrates the significant role of the self-employed group throughout the islands and their crucial contribution to the local economy.

We rush so fast toward the future that we forget it's with that same speed that we move away from the present and leave the past behind. And I no longer know if it's deliberate: to avoid having time to consider whether we've made a mistake, because we don't know exactly who we are or what we want, for fear of having taken the wrong shortcut at some point and not knowing how to retrace our steps. Or perhaps this is the only pace to get there. The fact is, at least for me, my relationship with time is becoming increasingly dysfunctional.

The initiative seeks to "record the present before it becomes the past," combining technical training with ethical reflection and fieldwork. This week, the project brought together professionals from the museum and fishing sectors to reflect on the importance of conserving tangible and intangible heritage and documenting living memory in a context of social and environmental change. On Monday, the first round table discussion took place with the participation of Toni Vich, director of the Marratxí Clay Museum; Aina Ferrero, director of the Inca Footwear and Industry Museum; and technician and professor Biel Company. The session addressed the cataloging of collections, heritage custody, and the social role of local museums.

We've known from the first minute of her term in office that Margalida Prohens is not the president of all the people who live on the islands. She is not the president of those who have trouble finding or paying rent for decent housing, nor of the immigrants who arrive precariously to work in jobs that people here no longer want to do. She is not the president of those who love the language here, the Catalan of Mallorca, nor the president of those who defend the territory and nature from the virulent attacks of their promoting friends. But, above all, she is not the president of the victims of Franco's regime, whom she first ignored, then betrayed, and finally spat in the face of.
