The Costitx Town Council has decided to stand up to incivility and has launched an emergency plan to secure the waste disposal site with a new access card system and the installation of surveillance cameras equipped with artificial intelligence. This has resulted in the imposition of a dozen fines in the first half-year of operation.

Costitx has lost more than just a neighbor. It has lost one of its most authentic intellectual and spiritual references. Rafel Horrach i Llabrés of Can Mal (Costitx, 1955) has died at the age of 70, leaving a legacy that goes beyond the cassock or history books: the man who knew how to explain who we are so that we know where we should go is gone.

Almost at the same time, just a few days ago, two pieces of news reached us. One: the State denied the temporary loan of the three prehistoric bull heads found over a century ago in Costitx, to be exhibited at the Museum of Mallorca. "The Ministry of Culture is laughing at the Majorcans," stated the president of the Council, Llorenç Galmés. Two: the discovery in the Tramuntana mountain range of a small bull head – precisely! – which this time will remain on the island. We recall the discovery of the bulls and how and why they ended up in Madrid, at the National Archaeological Museum (MAN).

The Costitx Town Council has taken a positive step towards resolving one of the most pressing problems for residents of the historic centers of the Pla region: the lack of parking. The Council has approved, for the first time, a tax and regulatory ordinance for driveways, introducing a system that allows owners of driveways to park their vehicles in front of them. This measure follows the path taken by other municipalities in the Pla de Mallorca region, such as Vilafranca de Bonany, which have long embraced this approach to optimize available public space. In other municipalities, like Sineu, it was the opposition that requested it. Until now, and according to general traffic regulations, a driveway prohibited parking for any vehicle without exception, including the vehicle of the permit holder. Now, Costitx is adapting to the reality of narrow streets and limited public parking spaces, transforming what was previously a mandatory empty space into an authorized parking area. In municipalities where this measure has been implemented, the main objective is to intelligently free up parking spaces on public roads. When a homeowner can park their car in front of their garage, they automatically free up a space elsewhere on the street that it previously occupied, without causing any additional inconvenience to other residents, since the driveway space should already be kept clear by law. However, city councils usually specify in their ordinances that authorization is always subject to technical safety and traffic criteria and the relevant reports. In fact, on streets where the width is so narrow that a parked car could obstruct the passage of emergency vehicles or cleaning services, the reserved parking space might not be authorized to protect the public interest.

The organ in the parish church of Santa María de Costitx, one of the municipality's most unique heritage pieces, is currently undergoing a new phase of restoration and study. The instrument, which has accompanied the town's liturgical celebrations for decades, is part of the Pla de Mallorca organ collection and represents a key element of its musical memory. Therefore, thanks to the initiative of local residents, this organ will soon be able to play again, fully restored. The project has been spearheaded by Jordi Fiol, whose drive, along with the collaboration of other residents, such as pianist and conservatory professor Andrea Díaz, and the restoration work of master organist Wilfried Praet, has ensured that the parish organ will soon be heard once more. The restoration cost, estimated at around €40,000, will have been covered by the townspeople and the Town Hall.

From the town square to the council chamber, from local festivals to municipal debates, the Pla de Mallorca is built day by day, town by town. Throughout 2025, the events in the 14 municipalities and the Commonwealth have painted a diverse yet shared picture of a region facing structural challenges while keeping its identity alive.

The 31-year-old man who attempted to murder his ex-partner in Costitx on November 30th has been remanded in custody without bail. The incident occurred on the street opposite a house in the village of Costitx, when the victim, a resident of Alaró, went to a party.

The educational community of the San Francisco de Asís nursery school in Pil·larí (Palma) gathered this Tuesday afternoon to condemn the gender-based violence suffered by one of its employees, a 35-year-old woman stabbed on Sunday by her ex-partner as she left a party at an estate in Costit. The man had a restraining order in place.

The 35-year-old woman who was brutally attacked and stabbed by her ex-partner in Costitx on Sunday remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Son Espases Hospital, in serious but stable condition. The assailant is also still in custody at the same hospital, having been transferred from Inca Hospital. Agents from the Women and Minors Unit (EMUME) of the Civil Guard have taken charge of the investigation to try to clarify the circumstances of the incident. It should be recalled that the woman was allegedly stabbed as she left a house where a party was taking place on the outskirts of Costitx by her ex-partner, against whom there was a restraining order. The incident occurred at approximately 5:12 a.m. last Sunday, when the woman was ambushed by her ex-partner as she left a party at a house on the outskirts of this town in the Pla de Mallorca region. The man arrived at the property and assaulted the woman, who, due to her injuries, was taken to Son Espases University Hospital. The man injured himself and was taken to Inca Hospital in stable condition. Authorities remind women who are victims of gender-based violence and those around them that they can contact the IBDona 24-hour service at 900 178 989, and also the victim support hotline 016. In emergency situations, call 11.

A total of five people were injured, one seriously, in a traffic accident on Monday on the Ma-3011 highway, which connects Sineu with Palma, near the municipality of Costitx. The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. at kilometer 26 of this road when a car and a van collided at high speed from behind, according to reports from SAMU 061 (the emergency medical service) and the Civil Guard. After the initial impact, the van reportedly crossed into the oncoming lane, causing a second collision with two other cars. Emergency medical services and firefighters from Mallorca were dispatched to the scene to attend to the victims. Among them were two children, ages 6 and 8, who were taken to Son Espases Hospital with minor injuries.

The Costitx Town Council has issued fines in the last three months to people who have illegally dumped construction debris at the municipal recycling center. The installation of surveillance cameras has been key to identifying the offenders and processing the corresponding fines, which range from €300 to €1,500, as established by the municipal ordinance. In some of the detected cases, as can be seen in the image provided by the Town Council, the perpetrators even used wheelbarrows to unload the waste, clearly violating the regulations on the management of construction debris. Three of the fines were considered serious and carried the maximum penalty stipulated by the ordinance, amounting to €1,500. In the other cases, the infractions were minor, and the fine was €300. The City Council reminds residents that this type of waste cannot be freely disposed of at the recycling center; instead, the established procedures must be followed to ensure proper and environmentally responsible management. The City Council urges citizens to act responsibly and with environmental awareness to preserve the environment and avoid penalties.

Costitx Town Council has launched a new tourism campaign to promote local heritage and culture. Titled "Welcome to Costitx," the council has promoted a video campaign on social media and informational posters placed in different locations throughout the town.

More than a hundred people, including the mayors of Sineu and Costitx, have supported GADMA (Group of Friends in Defense of the Environment) and the Platform for Open Public Paths to demand the enforcement of the two rulings that call for the opening of the Casa Baixa public path, which connects Sineu and Costitx.

Residents of Pla de Mallorca, along with members of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Environment (GADMA) and the pro-path platforms of Manacor and Pollença, gathered on the old Costitx path (which belongs to the municipality of Sineu) to demand its reopening.
