This model is designed for people with a higher level of autonomy than required by the traditional residential model, which is intended for more advanced dependency, the Council explained in a statement. The new facility aims to offer an alternative adapted to current needs, promoting personal autonomy and quality of life. According to Mayor Josep Ferrà, with the opening of these eight supervised living places, Esporles will have, for the first time and after many years of effort, its first residential service in the municipality, within the framework of the 2026-2030 Social and Healthcare Infrastructure Plan. "These first eight places are just the beginning; in the coming years we will continue working to expand the offering and meet the needs of our seniors," said Ferrà. In the coming months, the City Council and the Regional Ministry of Families, Social Welfare, and Dependency Care will work together to define the terms of the future agreement, finalize the proposal for the residential space, and formalize the agreement that will allow the service to begin. The Councilor for Social Services, Maria Roig, stated that "the aim is for it to happen as soon as possible, and, if it depends on the City Council, for it to be a reality this year, 2026, since the facilities are already built."

Loneliness is not just a problem affecting the elderly; increasingly, young people and adults are living alone. Ferran Didac i Lluch, a philosopher from Mahón specializing in geography, even predicts that unwanted loneliness will increase by 62% in the Islands over the next 15 years. Many of these people will also spend the Christmas and New Year holidays alone, when social isolation due to a lack of relationships or unforeseen circumstances becomes more pronounced. Women, especially in old age and due to their greater longevity, are more likely to live alone and, therefore, are more likely to face these kinds of situations.

The size of this group continues to grow year after year, increasing the need to strengthen their care both in nursing homes and in their own homes. This trend is most pronounced in Menorca, which has the oldest population in the Islands. The average age is 43.51 years, higher than in the rest of the archipelago and Spain, and the over-65 segment, comprising 18,351 people, represents 18% of the residents. In fact, the population of Menorcans over 85 has doubled since the beginning of the century. Menorca is also the island most affected by the lack of qualified professionals to adequately care for the elderly. The island's double insularity and the severe difficulty of accessing housing complicate the problem for the Administration, which cannot find enough staff to meet the current needs of its centers, let alone those under construction. New nursing homes, long awaited and almost ready to open, currently lack sufficient staff to guarantee their operation.

They can also graduate without taking any assessments if they attend 80% of the classes. "They are the best students I've ever had. They are thoughtful and open-minded, people who are used to listening, something rare these days," explains David Abril, the professor of the course and of Sociology. "They participate without being asked, they bring things up, they question them... This is ideal at any age and it's harder to achieve with young people," he adds, also acknowledging that the reality he has found at the UOM "has exceeded" his expectations—it's the first time he's taught.

Global life expectancy has increased by almost 40 years in the last century alone. It stands at around 73 years on average worldwide, and between 81 and 82 years in the European context. At the other extreme, we find sub-Saharan African countries where it is difficult to surpass 55. Life expectancy is, therefore, a reflection of inequalities on a global scale, but also an indicator of welfare policies. Because even in the developed world, not everything is set in stone. It is assumed that, now a quarter of the way through the 21st century, things should continue to evolve positively, but the United States, where life expectancy had already stagnated and is now beginning to decline, is a reminder that we cannot take anything for granted.
