Residents of Palma and the citizens' platform in defense of the beautiful shade trees will continue their protests to demand accountability from the Palma City Council (Cort) for the felling of 17 trees in Plaça de Llorenç Villalonga. "We will not stop," affirmed Nina, a member of the Canamunt Neighborhood Association. They also announced plans for further actions to denounce "the unnecessary mass felling, the refusal to take a less drastic approach, the lack of transparency, the absence of citizen participation, and the speed with which the felling was carried out," among other things, explained the president of the La Calatrava Neighborhood Association. The residents requested an urgent meeting with the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martinez, to initiate a dialogue and halt any similar actions to those taken in Plaça de Llorenç Villalonga. Citizens are accusing the City Council of violating the Organic Regulations for Citizen Participation by failing to provide them with reports detailing the poor condition of the trees and by rejecting the alternative proposals they submitted to the council to avoid removing the trees. The coordinators of the initiatives have not specified the nature of the activities because, they believe, "the element of surprise is very important." With these demands, the citizens intend to ask the City Council a series of questions that challenge and question its actions. "Were 17 diseased trees planted in a year and a half? Why, if the trees posed such a high risk of falling, wasn't the plaza closed to traffic during the massive festival for the town's patron saint or during the wine fair held in the Parque del Mar?" Navarro asked.

A total of 56 organic farms in Mallorca have planted 2,424 fruit trees during the first two years of the 'Mallorca en Fruit' project. This initiative, promoted by Apaema and funded by the Mallorca Preservation Foundation, allows farmers to establish new plantations with minimal financial investment, while simultaneously strengthening the resilience of organic agriculture by prioritizing projects that use local varieties adapted to climate change. The main objective of the project "is to stimulate and promote fruit tree projects rather than simply focusing on the number of trees planted," explain sources at Apaema. The financial contributions are intended as a catalyst for launching productive activities that can ultimately expand. All of this is aimed at "recovering and ensuring a future for the production and marketing of local fruit, which is clearly in decline."

The Palma City Council condemned the removal of some of the barriers installed in Llorenç Villalonga Square last Friday due to the alleged risk of trees falling, and announced that it will report the incident to the court and the Public Prosecutor's Office, considering that public safety has been compromised. "The restricted area is a space where municipal technical reports warn of the risk posed by the existing trees, which has allowed people to move freely under specimens with structural defects," the City Council stated. They also pointed out that the removal of the barriers has caused material damage, with elements displaced and left on the ground, hindering the work of municipal services. Sources at the City Hall emphasized that this type of action cannot be considered a legitimate form of protest because it poses a risk to the public. As Cort explained, all the planned work in the square is based exclusively on technical criteria and risk prevention, following a review of the 18 existing shade trees, which, according to the technicians, present the same structural problems as other trees in the area that have already broken.
