Before getting to know the Islands, Manolo García had already looked at them many times. They were in the photographs his father kept from his military service in Ibiza, where he had done his military service in 1954, and in the landscapes of the painters that fascinated him when, as a teenager, he went to the museum. "It was a paradise," he recalls of that paper Ibiza. Later he would arrive there himself, initially without the memories he would go on to accumulate through concerts, trips, and friendships. Now that he returns to Mallorca to exhibit, his father's images reappear among the explanations of his paintings and a very present concern: he acknowledges that many people make a living from tourism, but warns that "everything has a price."

There is a Mallorca that does not appear on postcards, which remains far from the sea and above all from the images with which the island has projected itself to the world. It is the Mallorca of the interior, of the old paths between villages, of the fields and the small farms that for generations sustained a way of life. The photographer Tomeu Coll (Sant Jordi, 1981) has been photographing this universe that has practically vanished for at least 20 years. The result is Fauç. Illa interior, 2004-2024, an exhibition that can be visited at the Espai Passatemps in Santa Maria from October 21st to November 30th.

The Coster Art i Natura – Centre d'Investigació i Producció Artística, in Pollença, inaugurates this Friday two new exhibition proposals that reinforce its commitment to contemporary art and the dialogue between creation, nature, and thought. On the one hand, it presents Transmigración de almas, an installation by Luis Gordillo, one of the most influential artists in Spanish contemporary art. On the other hand, the writer and curator Jorge Carrión intervenes in the center with Sistema nervioso (Una biblioteca distribuida), a project that turns the space into an expanded library linked to the landscape.

The Xavier Fiol gallery in Palma hosts, from this Friday, June 19th, until July 10th, an exhibition dedicated to photojournalism made entirely by professionals from Mallorca. The exhibition brings together 14 images that capture impactful moments of current events, from extreme meteorological phenomena to scenes of great social and political weight.

The Consell de Mallorca participates in the exhibition In the Manner of Italy. Spain and Mediterranean Gothic (1320-1420) at the Museu Nacional del Prado with two outstanding pieces from the Museu de Mallorca: 'La Taula de la crucifixió' and 'El Retaule de Santa Quitèria'. There are looks that not only document the world, but shake it. This is what we find at the Toni Catany International Photography Centre in Llucmajor, which this Friday, March 27, opened two exhibitions that fully align with this tradition: The insolent revolution of bodies, by Pilar Aymerich –curated by Laura Terré– and Honorary box, by Paula Artés. Two proposals that are part of the cycle Committed female photographers and which, from different times, contexts, and languages, share the desire to make visible that which often remains out of frame or dissolves into normality. From two very different generations and also from two diverse ways of expressing themselves through photography, both Aymerich and Artés understand photography not as a solitary gesture, but as a practice permeated by the relationship with others and with the surrounding context.

Palma will host the exhibition throughout the month of March GEAS. Women who study the EarthAn exhibition that aims to highlight the role of women in Earth sciences and showcase female role models in fields such as geology, oceanography, and paleontology. The initiative is organized by the Balearic Islands branch of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME), in collaboration with the Estudi General Lul·lià.

The Museum of Mallorca opens an exhibition this Tuesday, running until May 10, dedicated to the Mallorcan politician Antoni Maura, commemorating the centenary of his death. Organized by the Institute of Balearic Studies (IEB), the exhibition offers a journey through Maura's life and political career via seven thematic panels. Palma is revisiting the memory of the cinemas that, for decades, shaped the city's cultural and social life. The 'Palma, City of Cinemas' project, promoted by the Consell de Mallorca and developed entirely by the Mallorca Sound and Image Archive (ASIM), combines an immersive exhibition and a publication that reconstruct the history of the theaters that transformed cinema into a collective ritual. The exhibition can be visited in the Chapel of Mercy and on the first floor of the Entrepatis building, within the cultural center, from February 6 to April 11, 2026. The tour offers a journey through the evolution of Palma's cinemas and their social role through emblematic pieces, such as the iconic Metropolitan poster, vintage projectors, handbills, and materials by poster artist Rafael Ruiz.

Sergi Cámara (Vic, 1970) left local journalism, tired of the repetitive schedule, spurred on by the need to find his own path within photojournalism, and aware of the opportunities this work offers to denounce what happens (and what we don't see) every day outside our comfortable sphere. For example, at the borders erected by European countries when it comes to allowing passage to migrants or refugees seeking the peace of a better life.

It's not common, but sometimes, the pages of the history of a certain discipline record the origin of a passion, a connection with art that began at a specific time and place. This is the case of the Sondra Gilman - Celso González-Falla collection, considered one of the most prestigious photography collections in the world, with more than 1,500 works, and which has its beginnings in a handful of images acquired during the 1970s.
