The operation took place last Tuesday when agents from the Underwater Activities Specialist Group (GEAS) and members of the Maritime Rescue Service from Portocristo were conducting a joint operation in the northeast of Mallorca. When they spotted the animal floating in the sea, the agents carefully brought it aboard their vessel to prevent further harm. They then contacted the Palma Aquarium Foundation, which runs the marine wildlife recovery center, and transported the turtle to the port of Portocolom, where it was cared for by specialists. The turtle, named Mimosa – after the Maritime Rescue vessel that participated in the rescue – will be examined and receive veterinary care before its release is considered. Sources from the agency remind the public that, if they find an injured sea turtle, they should call 112 and not attempt to remove any plastic, threads, or nets that may be causing pressure. The animal should be placed in the shade, covered with a damp towel, but without covering its head or shell. The rescue of Mimosa highlights the impact of marine pollution on the wildlife of the Balearic Islands, where several turtles affected by plastic waste or fishing hooks must be treated each year.
