Often, the opposite is true. Among students with visible difficulties and a strained educational system, there's a group that still falls by the wayside: students with high abilities. In the Balearic Islands, there are 3,128 identified, a figure much lower than what is estimated to exist. “It has been little recognized, little understood, and little identified”, explains Rosabel Rodríguez, director of the Program for the Attention of Intellectual High Abilities (PACiS) at the UIB. This lack of recognition has consequences: “They are given very deficient educational attention in general. Many times, it doesn't even exist”.

The Minister of Education, Antoni Vera, and the Rector of the UIB, Jaume Carot, signed the agreement this Monday. According to a statement from the Ministry, these enrichment programs, Stimulation of Mathematical Talent (Estalmado) and MENTORiment, benefit 365 gifted students annually in schools across the archipelago. The four-year agreement includes a government contribution of €216,800 between 2025 and 2028 (27.5% more than the previous agreement) and aims to expand the number of mentoring sessions, increase student participation, and ensure quality and equity. Both programs, managed by the UIB, are initiatives that foster the development of talent and creativity, offering advanced learning opportunities and enriching experiences outside the regular classroom.
