The IB-Salut plans to incorporate nearly 200 nurses into the Community's health centers through an extraordinary integration process for staff destined for professionals with the specialty of Family and Community Nursing.

The difficulty in accessing housing and the high cost of living continue to take their toll on public healthcare in the Balearic Islands. The SATSE Nursing Union has reported that 80 nurses have left the Balearic Islands between January 1 and May 15, a situation it directly attributes to the impossibility for many professionals to maintain themselves economically in the Archipelago.

More than half of nurses in the Balearic Islands intend to leave the profession, according to a study carried out by the Ministry of Health and the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), through Investén-ISCIII. The research, considered "the largest conducted in Spain" on this issue, concludes that 39.6% of nursing professionals in the State as a whole plan to leave their jobs in the next decade and that 17% consider doing so in just two years. The work warns that the Balearic Islands, along with Madrid, the Canary Islands, and Galicia, have more than double the probability of intending to leave compared to Navarra.

The IB-Salut and the Official College of Nurses and Nursing Assistants of the Balearic Islands (Coiba) will file appeals for cassation before the Supreme Court against Ruling 170/2026 of the Superior Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSJIB), concerning the access of nursing professionals to management positions in the field of Primary Care. The resolution stems from the appeal filed by the medical union Simebal and the Official College of Physicians of the Balearic Islands (COMIB), who challenged the appointment of a nurse as coordinator of the Sa Torre health center, in Manacor (accepted by all staff at the center), and argued that these positions should be exclusively held by medical personnel.

The IB-Salut is considering filing an appeal against the ruling of the Superior Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands (TSIB) which orders the dismissal of the coordinating nurse of the Manacor health center. The high court accepted the appeal from the medical union Simebal. "Nurses are fully qualified to direct any health center," defended the Minister of Health Manuela García, in the plenary session of Parliament, after the PSIB deputy and former minister, Patricia Gómez, asked her about the controversy generated by this sentence. "They are an essential part of any health center, key to ensuring the quality, efficiency, and humanization of care. Leadership must be based on skills, knowledge, experience, and management capacity. Currently, there are two nurses in strategic positions: at Son Llàtzer and at SAMU 061. I want to be clear: a basic health area must be directed by the professional with the best skills to do so. This is not determined by professional category. Is that clear?", said the minister.

The affected nurse had been managing the center for six years with the consensus of the entire healthcare team at the center, including the doctors, who considered her the most suitable person. Authorized health sources do not understand the logical reasoning that a nurse cannot direct a health center, but can manage a hospital, as is the case, for example, with Son Llàtzer Hospital.

The affected nurse had been directing the center for six years with the consensus of the entire health team of the center, including the doctors, who considered her to be the most suitable person. Authorized health sources do not understand the logical reasoning that a nurse cannot direct a health center, but can assume the management of a hospital, as happens, for example, in the case of Son Llàtzer Hospital. The same sources recall that, when the former Minister of Health, Patrícia Gómez, a nurse by profession, took office, her worth was also questioned because she was not a doctor.

The nursing union Satse has denounced the "serious collapse" of public hospitals in the Balearic Islands due to "the lack of foresight and planning by IB-Salut (the Balearic Islands Health Service) in the face of increased demand for care" caused by the flu season and other respiratory illnesses typical of this time of year. According to a statement released by the nursing union on Thursday, the situation is critical and affects virtually all hospitals in the archipelago. The organization indicated that Son Espases Hospital currently has 79 patients awaiting admission and its Emergency Department is completely overwhelmed, while Son Llàtzer Hospital has 36 people awaiting admission and 78 patients being treated in its saturated Emergency Department. Furthermore, the Short-Stay Unit and the waiting room for patients at Manacor Hospital are full. The union added that at the Inca Regional Hospital, both the emergency room and the ICU are full, and more than 20 patients are waiting for ward discharges to be processed before they can be admitted. Meanwhile, the Mateu Orfila Hospital in Menorca has no beds available, and the emergency room in Ibiza is similarly overwhelmed, with staff shortages. Satse asserted that this collapse is not an unforeseen situation, but rather the result of poor management, due to inadequate planning, a failure to open beds, and a lack of reinforcement of human resources.
