The 2026 grape harvest in Mallorca has begun two weeks earlier than usual due to high temperatures recorded since the end of June. Wineries of the IGP Vi de la Terra Mallorca have already collected 1,582,915 kilograms of grapes, mainly white varieties, and forecasts indicate a final production similar to last year's, during which 5.3 million kilograms were brought in.

The high temperatures have advanced this year's grape harvest in Mallorca, to the point that some wineries have begun to receive grapes on July 21, almost a month earlier than was usual just a decade ago. The first varieties to enter the wineries are mainly white, and the sector assures that, for the moment, both the sanitary state and the quantity of grapes are satisfactory.

The Binissalem Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) has approved a modification to its specifications to include three new grape varieties: Acicate de Gallo, Girón Negro, and Fogoneo. These three are local varieties with a documented presence in the region since the 19th century and a strong historical connection to the production area, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Natural Environment announced in a statement. Although their cultivation declined from the 1980s onward with the introduction of foreign varieties, their recovery has been promoted in recent decades, along with the production and marketing of single-varietal wines. Several scientific studies have confirmed that these local varieties enhance the fruity aroma of the wines (one of the distinctive characteristics of wines protected by the Binissalem PDO) and contribute to improving natural acidity, a particularly important factor in partially mitigating the negative effects of climate change.
