Son Espases University Hospital has begun to reschedule non-urgent surgeries and reinforce the emergency service staff due to the peak in healthcare demand registered since Wednesday, a situation that has also forced a review of the planned activity for next week.

The Patient Advocacy Association has requested that the Balearic Islands Prosecutor's Office investigate the regional government for the lack of beds in public hospital emergency departments. In a letter addressed to the deputy prosecutor, Adrián Salazar, the association argues that these actions could constitute a crime of dereliction of duty.

The Balearic Islands Federation of Health and Social Services Sectors of the CCOO union has warned of a new collapse in the Emergency Department of Son Espases University Hospital, where more than 70 patients are awaiting admission to a ward. According to a statement released by the union, this situation is creating a "significant backlog in care," with patients remaining for hours in the Emergency Department waiting for a hospital bed. This, CCOO pointed out, directly impacts the quality of care and safety conditions for both patients and staff. The union deemed it "unacceptable" that the hospital is keeping resources idle while the department is overcrowded. "It is not normal to have dozens of patients waiting for admission when there are beds that should be made available immediately," the statement read.

The nursing union Satse has warned of a new "collapse" in the emergency department of Son Espases University Hospital due to a lack of beds and their mismanagement. According to Erlina Vijande, the union's representative at the hospital, who spoke to Europa Press, there are approximately 70 patients in the emergency department waiting to be transferred to a ward, and in the meantime, they are waiting in various makeshift areas. "The collapse has been worsening for the last three days. Some people have been waiting to be transferred to a ward since January 30th," she stated. Throughout Wednesday, Vijande noted, ambulances were even diverted to Son Llàtzer Hospital, given its better situation. This new "collapse," the union representative pointed out, is due not only to the lack of beds but also to their "poor management." "We demand proper bed management and solutions to the problems, because we've been enduring a heavy workload for years, improvising on the fly, and working grueling shifts," he stated.
