<![CDATA[Ara Balears in English - Muslims]]> 10 <![CDATA[Rights that bother]]> I will say nothing new: when the far-right (and increasingly the right) speaks of freedom, it does so from very unfree parameters. It is not a freedom for everyone or for anything. It is what fascists consider appropriate and for whom they deem worthy. They defend the freedom to go to mass, but not to go to the mosque. They eat lamb pastries for Easter, but they are scandalized when Muslims celebrate the lamb festival. They make their children practice a religion without consulting them, but if they have sex education at school, it is indoctrination. They talk about the right to think as one wishes, but they want to ban political parties with a different ideology. They think the State should not interfere in our existences, but they point fingers at people who do not live according to their precepts.

]]> <![CDATA["We are Muslim, feminist, and Catalan nationalist"]]>

Douae El Mojahidi is 19 years old, grew up in Campos, and identifies as Muslim, feminist, and Catalan nationalist. Perhaps having lived between different cultures and identities, even though she didn't choose it, has given her a maturity and an ability to analyze the world that is unusual for her age. Her story is reminiscent of the "three rebellious turns" that Maria Mercè Marçal spoke of in her famous poem. When asked where she's from, she doesn't have a simple answer. Her identity shifts between places, languages, and cultures: the Amazigh of her family and the Mallorcan of the street. She was born in Algeciras, but grew up in Mallorca, in Campos, where she has spent her entire life. "When people ask me where we're from, I don't have a single answer," she explains. "I was born in Andalusia, but I've lived my whole life in Mallorca. I learned to speak Catalan here, my friends are here, I went to high school here… basically, I grew up here."
