The Balearic Islands are facing an increase in requests for help related to emotional suffering and suicidal behavior. The Telephone of Hope (Telephone of Hope) has handled 2,503 calls during the first semester of 2026, almost 50% more than in the same period last year, while the SAMU 061 has received 2,138 alerts for suicidal ideation or attempts between January and August, with 35 deaths recorded. The figures were released by the Government on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, which is commemorated this Thursday, in a context in which administrations and entities insist on the need to detect and address suffering before it leads to suicidal behavior.

Requests for help to the Telèfon de l’Esperança (Hope Phone) have increased by 40% during the first half of 2026 in the Balearic Islands compared to the same period last year, according to data collected in the report that the organization will present on Wednesday on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day.

The Telephone of Hope has warned of the significant increase in emotional distress, especially after the covid-19 pandemic, as well as the psychological impact of prolonged care, a reality that is "invisible" and mainly affects women. According to data presented this Tuesday by the entity, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the Telephone of Hope in the Balearic Islands has attended since 1986 a total of 98,540 requests for help and nearly 25% –24,735– of the demands have been concentrated in the last six years, as pointed out by the spokesperson, Lino Salas.

The Hope Line has warned of a significant increase in emotional distress, especially after the covid-19 pandemic, in addition to the psychological impact of prolonged care, a reality that is "invisible" and disproportionately affects women.
