The Council of Mallorca has on its table a report from the General Intervention, the highest auditing body of the institution. It uncovers a presumed unjust enrichment of 41.4 million euros by Tirme, the waste concessionaire. Faced with the financial scandal, the response of the Galmés government has been to announce a new audit that is “more extensive and more powerful”.

The Council of Mallorca will commission new legal reports and a new "more powerful and extensive" audit before making any decision regarding the current concession with Tirme for the treatment of urban solid waste. This was explained by the island's Minister of Finance, Llorenç Bosch, during the first plenary session of the Council of Mallorca.

The PSIB-PSOE does not intend to overlook the report from the General Intervention of the Council of Mallorca, which makes a very unfavorable assessment of the Tirme concession and concludes that it has a serious impact on the interests of the Administration. The socialist spokesperson at the island institution, Catalina Cladera, demanded this Tuesday "the immediate halt" of the tariff modification file, the suspension of the application of the 2026 tariff, and the review of the 41 million euro credit modification approved by the Council plenary session in the month of July.

The platform No to the import of waste has demanded that the Consell de Mallorca review the calculation of the waste tariff and carry out independent audits in view of the "serious conclusions" of the financial control report. Faced with information about the publication of the island institution's financial control report, the platform, made up of 20 entities, has focused on the "stratospheric profits" obtained by the concessionaire company Tirme.

A worker died this Tuesday at the Tirme facilities, as reported by the CCOO union, which has requested that the circumstances of the incident be investigated, after high levels of carbon monoxide were detected. This is an employee from the night shift of the Ilunion company who, according to the information provided by the union organization, was found lifeless at 9:00 PM.

CCOO has called for "forceful" action from the Consell de Mallorca, the Labour Inspectorate, and the Public Prosecutor's Office in response to the "abuses and serious irregularities" that, according to the union, are occurring at Tirme, the concessionary company responsible for managing the public service of urban waste treatment in Mallorca. The trade union organisation points out that the concessionary's net profits have risen from 15.6 million euros in 2019 to 32.6 million in 2024.

The No to Waste Import platform has publicly denounced that "the problems have already begun" as a result of the transfer of waste from Ibiza to Mallorca to be incinerated at the Tirme plant. In a statement, the organization, made up of more than 20 entities, stated that a few days ago an "incident" occurred at the incinerator which would have been caused by waste from Ibiza.

The 10% reduction in the waste treatment fee approved this Wednesday by the Plenary of the Consell de Mallorca has been, in part, overshadowed by the tough political debate over the Tirme concession. The PSIB and Més per Mallorca have reproached the president of the institution, Llorenç Galmés, for maintaining a model that, in their opinion, continues to favor the concessionaire despite the warnings issued by the control bodies of the Consell itself.

Mallorca will begin to receive next Thursday seven daily trucks of waste from Ibiza, five days a week, with a total of 3,000 tons of garbage each month. The pilot test for the transfer of waste from the Pitiusa island, which the island councils approved last Tuesday, will cost 24.6 million euros, as stated in the documentation of the file that ARABalears advanced. The agreement has been drawn up over a year, hidden from the opposition –it was not delivered until the Transparency Council requested it–, and it includes a reduction in the environmental criteria initially foreseen.

The Consell de Mallorca has not managed to authorize the administrative file to validate the agreement with Eivissa for the transfer of waste between the two islands. This situation formally prevents its signing and puts the start of the new inter-island system for managing the residual fraction on hold, just when the logistical device associated with the project is advanced and with a ship about to arrive in Eivissa, as reported by ARA Balears. Furthermore, it should be remembered that the Ca na Putxa landfill is close to reaching its operational limit.

A court in Palma has partially upheld a lawsuit filed by CCOO de l'Hàbitat against Tirme, UGT, and ARL for preventing the participation of the CCOO delegate in a meeting where labor issues were discussed.
