The Supreme Court's decision to suspend the right to vote for a portion of Spaniards who have obtained nationality through the Democratic Memory Law has surprised both the beneficiaries and the rest of the voters abroad who are registered in the Electoral Roll of Spaniards Resident Abroad (CERA). The witnesses consulted by ARA Balears reject the idea of questioning an acquired fundamental right, as well as Vox's assumption that the socialist party might have wanted to inflate the census so that these votes would benefit them in the upcoming elections.

The census of absent resident voters (CERA) has grown considerably since October 2022, when the instruction regulating naturalizations through the Democratic Memory Law came into effect. Specifically, in the Balearic Islands, the increase has been 27%. Given this, the Supreme Court has acceded to the claims of Vox and Iustitia Europa and has temporarily blocked the right to vote for a portion of the people who have obtained nationality through this route. But the truth is that the votes of those registered in the CERA are a small percentage of the total. In the last general elections of 2023, they represented 0.84% of the country as a whole, and 0.46% of the Islands. How do these changes to the census affect things in practice?
