Prohens announces that the Government will build 1,213 new public housing units

The president assures that 90% will begin construction in 2026.

Palm1,213 new public housing units: this is the figure that the President of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, announced this Monday to representatives of the island councils and municipalities of the Balearic Islands. Prohens also stated that 90 percent will begin construction in 2026 and that, once completed, the Ibavi housing stock will have increased by 50 percent (from 2,509 to 3,722 units). Prohens reiterated, seven times, that the public housing will be "for the people of here" and reminded everyone of the requirement the Government has implemented to access subsidized or price-controlled housing: proof of a minimum of five years of residency in the Balearic Islands, a period that reaches 20 years in some cases. Of the total, 613 homes will be built in Mallorca; 292 in Ibiza; 248 in Menorca and 60 in Formentera, thanks to the transfer of municipal land. The president has assured that most can begin construction next year thanks to the Law on Strategic Residential Projects, which has reduced the processing time by about two years. Forty-seven developments will be launched in some thirty municipalities (Alaró, Artà, Bunyola, Calvià, Capdepera, Felanitx, Manacor, María de la Salut, Marratxí, Palma, Petra, Pollensa, Sa Pobla, Sant Joan, Sant Llorenç, Santa Maria, Sencelles, Sineu, Sóller, Maestro, Ciutadella, Ibiza, Sant Antoni de Portmany, and Formentera, among others). The public investment will be 228 million euros, and Prohens has spoken of an "unprecedented commitment to public housing."

"These are concrete projects and developments with quantified value on plots of land prepared for their construction. Now comes the processing and execution," said the president, emphasizing that the developments "can be declared investments of regional interest." "We prioritize families, young people who can no longer afford it, and workers," Prohens continued, while also stressing that the new homes "should not change the character of the towns" with new residents. Prohens also indicated that the Governing Council will declare some thirty developments of regional interest on Friday and confirmed that the land transfers from the municipalities "have already been signed."
