Since April 16, long queues at town halls have become the image of the extraordinary regularization promoted by the Spanish government. They have been preparing documentation for months, but until the last minute they did not know that they would also need a vulnerability certificate, and this partly explains the saturation of the system. "I don't understand why they want it, if all of us who are undocumented are vulnerable," reflects Abdou, a 32-year-old Senegalese. Despite this, the priority is clear. "Even if we have to lose work days: papers are papers," assures Khalid.

However, jurists and legal professionals also warn of technical shortcomings and application difficulties that have generated uncertainty and occasional collapses in the first few days.

The extraordinary regularization of immigrants has become a new front of political confrontation between the State government and various right-wing autonomous executives, including that of the Balearic Islands. The debate, legitimate in a democracy, is today a war of attrition that runs the risk of dehumanizing a reality that affects thousands of people. In the Islands, it is estimated that more than 30,000 people could benefit from this process. These are not abstract figures, they are lives that depend, to a large extent, on being able to escape administrative irregularity.

As the popular saying goes, “he who eats snails for Saint Mark's Day enjoys good health for free” and it is customary to eat them on this day. Some say that eating snails for Saint Mark's Day prevents being touched, that is, falling ill in one way or another. My great-grandmother used to eat one raw every year and she did well, until she was 93. In my town, they don't have snail feasts for Saint Mark's Day, but rather they are typical for the Cross, on May 3rd, a little later. This day is a big celebration in the Camarata neighborhood, and all the locals who have at least one leg go down to eat snails with family and friends.

And even more so when the elderly people of Ciutat still remember that right here, in Hort del Rei, there were the Líric theatre, the Alhambra hotel, the mythical Riskal café... The truth, however, is that with the demolition of those buildings, what had already been a green area in the Middle Ages was recovered, only this time it was not done for the enjoyment of a monarch, but for the entire citizenry – and tourists, of course. We recall the history of Hort del Rei as sixty years have passed since the project that the architect Gabriel Alomar Esteve made in 1966 and which envisaged the recovery of that space.

Its six textile factories had managed to forge a strong proletarian consciousness. The inauguration in 1930 of the Casa del Pueblo would be a reflection of that class pride. Already in the municipal elections of April 12, 1931, the municipality would be one of the few on the island where the left triumphed. Two days later, King Alfonso XIII departed into exile and the Second Republic was proclaimed.

One of the thousands scattered across the Mallorcan geography that have defined its landscape and, therefore, its culture and identity for centuries. Specifically, since the end of the 18th century. Filtered through Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955), however, it is many other things, without ceasing to be, precisely, an almond tree. It is a sculptural figure, which alludes to a human presence, perhaps the naked body of a woman, and at the same time it is a kind of zombie, an anonymous and forgotten vestige: a part of the remains left by the Xylella fastidiosa catastrophe in the Mallorcan countryside. It is a relic, and also a prophecy, which is difficult to distinguish whether it comes from the dream world or the real one.

It has been almost two years since the European Union approved the Nature Restoration Regulation after months of blocking by some countries opposed to this new legislation. Finally, on June 17, 2024, it was definitively approved at the last minute. Hungary changed its vote at the last moment and it was only achieved thanks to the positive vote of the Austrian minister, who even voted against the official position of her own government. This step has been decisive in making a leap forward in the environmental policies of the EU member states. Faced with a situation where nature conservation policies are no longer sufficient to stop the environmental degradation of our ecosystems, this regulation aims to restore at least 20% of the EU's terrestrial and marine areas by 2030 and all ecosystems that need it by 2050. And it does so with a stronger regulatory framework than European directives, such as those on water, habitats, and birds. This means that the regulation not only sets objectives like the directives, but all countries must obligatorily apply its entire content.

A program that was already quite appealing in itself, with a degree of difficulty that made it an added value and with an undisputed figure, Eduardo Ríos, violinist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, as the soloist commissioned for the occasion to bring to life the Violin Concerto in D major, op. 6. One of the most convoluted concertos and the only one Ludwig van Beethoven composed for the instrument. A composition that, like so many others, carries its legend attached. Premiered by Franz Clement, he received the score very shortly before the concert, and performed it as if it were almost a first reading, but, moreover, he added a sonata of his own as a cadenza played on a single string and with the violin upside down. So difficult was the execution of the concerto that the virtuosos of the time decided it was unplayable, until, thirty-six years after its premiere, at the age of thirteen, and with Felix Mendelssohn conducting, Josef Joachim placed it on the pedestal it deserved and from which it has never descended again.

He was, without a doubt, the one who turned the concert into a spectacle of dimensions that correspond to his own. Immediately after the ornithological composition came the first main course of the program, with pianist Olga Kern as the great protagonist, to perform the Piano Concerto in A minor op. 54, by Robert Schumann. He began the first movement, with a very solid, somewhat rocky style, and a very firm pulse, from the decisive entry of the piano, with a martial and powerful succession of descending chords, until reaching the polyhedral cadence of the finale, from where the composition's coloratura increased, with as much precision as elegance. Her interpretation was raising the level and delicacy, as for example, with the Andantino grazioso, a fun dialogue between the orchestra and the piano that, little by little, turns into a tender and subtle monologue of the solo instrument. Kern made her mastery and ability to suggest all this series of variations and styles that Schumann incorporated into the score, in a very novel way at the time, clear. The soloist, once again, resumed the energetic tone of the beginning, in an impetuous third movement, when, suddenly, she established a delightful new dialogue, this time with the oboe, as an announcement of the exceptional final coda that can only be described as exceptional and which served the protagonist to receive the enthusiastic applause of the audience. As it should have been and as everyone expected, there was an encore, first a Prelude, by Claude Debussy, which never disappoints or leaves one indifferent. Impeccable. And before the ovation-like plea, another little gem, by Nikolai Myaskovsky, a piano arrangement by Joseph Horovitz.

One of these small mountain ranges is Mala Costa or Sierra de Morna, although on the route we also cross the Sierras de San Vicente and San Carlos.

The dismissal, announced this Wednesday by Department of War spokesman Sean Parnell, highlights the differences within the leadership of the U.S. defense organization, immersed in the war against Iran. The Pentagon announced his departure in a brief statement, saying he was leaving the administration "with immediate effect," without providing further details. Beyond the data highlighted by the OECD – one in every two developed countries has similar cooperation programs between schools and authority agents "for preventive and community purposes" –, the United Kingdom began to do so shortly after the post-war period (1949, in Liverpool) with contact sessions with young people. But the most recognizable figure of agents in schools —school liaison officers— consolidated from the sixties. And the massive deployment arrived, especially, in the 2000s, under the governments of Tony Blair, with the safer school partnerships. As part of this initiative, officers —safer school officers— were assigned to specific schools, especially in vulnerable or considered problematic urban areas. In many cases, they worked physically within the schools, with an office, regular presence, and participation in the school's daily life, and also, occasionally, in the weekly and traditional assembly, the meeting of all students and staff, as a moment of reflection to strengthen the community. Usually, the officers were in uniform, as their role combined prevention and visibility.

The transfeminist movement is one of them, and Argentine activists Ornella Infante (former director of the National Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism of Argentina) and Belén Correa (researcher at the Archive of Trans Memory of Argentina) know this well. Both warn that the rights gained in recent decades are in danger and insist that no social conquest has been made without a struggle nor is maintained without defending it. The pull effect, the collapse of public services, the criminalization and instrumentalization of women's rights as an excuse to exhibit racist behavior are not the exclusive domain of Vox, with a PP concerned with capturing all the 'off-center' and right-wing vote it can in the next elections. "It's not enough, now we want much more: more majorities, more stability, fewer obstacles, fewer stumbling blocks," summarized the president of the Govern, Marga Prohens, on Thursday during the presentation of her candidacy to once again lead the Balearic PP. The popular leader brandished the flag of freedom, another usual mantra when it comes to exalting the party's values.

If you are expert clubbers you will have recognized the calendar ofopenings of the Ibizan clubs, a true marathon for party acrobats. Impossible to be at all of them. Or is it? “Most people go to at least two or three parties”, explains the manager of the Ocio de Ibiza association, José Luis Benítez. The trip to Ibiza has to be amortized. Most of the tickets have already been sold for weeks; in total, about 30,000 tickets, a figure that is also the total capacity of the Ibizan clubs. Yes, in Ibiza there can be about 30,000 people –legally– partying every day. This year, the clubs have once again anticipated the openings –traditionally they had always been in May– aware that they are the ones who kick off the Ibizan season. And it works: Iberia Express has had to put on 12 additional flights between Madrid and Ibiza due to the openings. The dancing machine will not stop until the first or second week of October; in case you are interested, the tickets for the closings are also on sale.

The housing crisis in Mallorca is reaching Pla little by little and it has a face and eyes, and in Porreres there is an example. A single-parent family from Porreres, made up of a mother and daughter, has turned what should have been a conventional advertisement looking for a rental apartment into an original protest publication through which they have wanted to make visible the reality of many families and also young people who find themselves with an increasingly inaccessible real estate market throughout Mallorca, and Pla is no exception.

He was undoubtedly the one who turned the concert into a spectacle of dimensions that corresponded to his own. Just after the ornithological composition, the first major highlight of the program arrived, with pianist Olga Kern as the great protagonist, to perform the Piano and Orchestra Concerto in A minor op. 54, by Robert Schumann. The first movement began, with a very solid, somewhat rocky style, and a very firm pulse, from the decisive entry of the piano, with a martial and powerful succession of descending chords, to reach the polyhedral cadence of the finale, from where the coloratura of the composition increased, with as much precision as elegance. Her performance was raising the level and delicacy, as for example, with the Andantino grazioso, a delightful dialogue between the orchestra and the piano that, little by little, turned into a tender and subtle monologue of the solo instrument. Kern made clear her mastery and ability to suggest all this series of variations and styles that Schumann incorporated into the score, in a very novel way for its time. The soloist, once again, resumed the energetic tone of the beginning, in an impetuous third movement, when, all of a sudden, she established a delightful new dialogue, this time with the oboe, as a prelude to the exceptional final coda that can only be described as exceptional and which served the protagonist to receive the enthusiastic applause of the audience. As it should be and as everyone expected, there was an encore, first a Prelude, by Claude Debussy, which never disappoints or leaves one indifferent. Impeccable. And in response to the plea in the form of an ovation, another little gem, by Nikolai Myaskovsky, a piano arrangement by Joseph Horovitz.

We think it is necessary to reflect on this, that images should also serve us to draw conclusions about the world we live in”. This is how Xavier Fiol, director of the festival, defines it, who, together with the general coordinator, Montserrat Torras, and with the advice of Xisco Bonnín and Horacio Fernández, has shaped a program that includes exhibitions, talks, guided tours, a reading club dedicated to photobooks, and a film series that will take place during May at the Teatre Sa Societat in Calvià.

When men were obliged to go to war, mothers, wives, and sisters did not hesitate to mobilize to save their loved ones from certain death. At that time, the Hispanic monarchy, following what was done in the rest of the continent, had three ways of supplying its troops: with mercenaries (professionals who fought in exchange for pay), with forced levies (generally from marginalized people, prisoners, and vagrants), and with the quintas.

It seems simple, but it isn't. Because when you try to define it, you understand that it's not just a dish: it's a world. On the Mediterranean islands —from the Balearics, with Mallorca and Menorca, to Sardinia— each place seems to know perfectly what an empanada is... until the discussion begins. From Palma to Maó, from Assemini, in southern Sardinia, to Cuglieri, in the province of Oristano, to Oschiri, in Gallura, each community defends theirs as the most authentic. And they are all right.

Tomàs Vibot and Just Hernàndez make this clear in the book Son Cortei, Conques i Galilea, published in 2009 by the Puigpunyent Town Hall: the establishment process of this nucleus is “a slow process motivated by inheritance policies” that led around 1586 to the segregation of an old farmstead of Bartomeu Cortei and the creation of small plots for the new settlers of the area.

We cross lands and historical possessions such as Son Dameto and Son Cabaspre, which reveal the extensive and deep human footprint on the territory. A walk for the pace and the gaze to feel the aromas and smell the territory. The moleta of Son Cabaspre allows us to survey the hills and slopes surrounding Esporles and, also, to contemplate the mountains that make up the western sector of the Tramuntana mountain range-World Heritage. Consider that we have public transport to get us to the starting and ending point of our itinerary. The line 202 that connects Estellencs and Palma stops at the central promenade of Esporles. This is one of the driving questions of A Truce That Is Not Peace, the new book by Miriam Toews (Steinbach, 1964), published in Catalan by Les Hores, translated by Octavi Gil Pujol. In the hands of many writers, the autobiographical material she unfolds would be mired in the swamp of traumas. The Canadian author, however, knows how to combine sadness and longing with a surprising sense of humor. She can just as easily rescue an anecdote from the Mennonite Christian community where she grew up as recall a funny family episode from the past – such as the robbery in Ecuador –, mention a book that has recently interested her, and draw the reader into her current reality: the author has had a small house built on the property where her mother, one of her daughters, her partner, and their two children live.

You just need to take a stroll through a well-run bookstore to verify that the good health of the Catalan publishing sector lies in the explosive diversity of proposals and in the quality and demand of many of these proposals. We choose just ten that we believe would be worth reaching more readers.

The farmed salmon fartanera: the best-selling and dyed according to the Pantone color of each country

https://en.ara.cat/food/the-farmed-salmon-fartanera-the-best-selling-and-dyed-according-to-the-pantone-color-of-each-country_1_5711766.html

Neither sardines nor anchovies. The most sold fish in our country is farmed salmon, which, for this reason, is gray and is dyed a range from pale orange to orange-red depending on the country where it is sold, because it is known that every land fights its war in colors. The popularity of salmon is probably explained because its nutritional benefits have been spread: as it is oily fish, it provides readily available omega-3. Sardines and anchovies from our ports also provide it. And you will say that salmon has no bones, and it is true, because they are removed with industrial machinery, and I counter-argue: the nutritional benefits of salmon, that is, the polyunsaturated fatty acids that regulate blood cholesterol levels and help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, are only achieved with sardines, anchovies, and oily fish in general with a short lifespan. And with wild salmon. Farmed salmon is another story, and I will explain why.To begin with, in floating cages there is a large number of salmon with a relatively small volume of water, states marine biologist Anna Bozzano, and this fact leads to all sorts of disadvantages. First: medicines have to be used because they are all together and a disease would be easily acquired by all of them. Second: the excrement they form there is organic matter that ends up at the bottom of the sea and suffocates marine life: "There is no animal that can eat it, and that is why the seabed under salmon aquaculture cages are deserts." Fattened with soy feed

To continue, farmed salmon is fattened with feed, made from small caught fish, processed into meal and with soy. “Until a few years ago, to grow one kilogram of salmon, five kilograms of small fish were needed. With soy, it has been balanced to one kilogram of small fish per kilogram of aquaculture; the rest is done by soy”, says Bozzano, who warns that if the proportion of soy with which they make the feed is higher than what the fish can absorb, they get sick because their system is not designed to feed on it. In this fact, the data must be highlighted: small fish and soy are needed to feed aquaculture, and these foods create consequences in the entire system. The small fish used to fatten salmon can come from other areas where the cages are located, such as Africa or South America. And, to finish, let's talk about the color of salmon. Wild salmon eat shrimp that contain a natural pigment, astaxanthin, but there are no small shrimp in the feed, which is why farmed salmon have gray flesh, which the market would not accept if it were put up for sale. So they dye it at the source before putting it on the market. Depending on each country, a different Pantone color. In our country, orange; if you travel and find other shades, lighter, redder, remember that it depends on the final pigment they have given it because it is the color that is liked in that country. A detail: the pigment can be natural or synthetic, which is allowed, but in the latter case, the exact amount that is healthy for the human body is measured, informs marine biologist Anna Bozzano.Despite all this, salmon is the best-selling fish. In 2023, eight thousand tons were sold; in 2024, nine thousand. The second best-selling fish, monkfish, is six thousand tons behind. It is clear, then, the abundance of salmon, but perhaps there is a way to save it: in a growing world population, with an emptying sea, is it perhaps the fish that can provide us with animal protein? But if the sea runs out of small fish, will farmed salmon also not be able to be fed? Perhaps we should eat small local fish and not a distant one, farmed crowded and fed with fish caught on the other side of the world. It is the (dyed) fish that eats its tail.

If we look in the Diccionari Català-Valencià-Balear we find that singlar, also written singlà, appears “as a synonym for senglar" in Igualada, Calders, Centelles, Manresa, etc. Our wise woman is from Bages. She lives in a neat farmhouse, where geese, dogs, rabbits, and chickens also live, in addition, of course, to part of her family. Today she is accompanied by one of her granddaughters, from Manresa, who, smiling, tells us: “I'm her assistant, but she goes on her own!” It's true. Our wise woman is agile, she doesn't stop moving, lifting pots. She immediately cuts fuet (homemade) to offer it to us.
