The National Police have arrested a man in Ibiza allegedly accused of three robberies with force and one crime of home invasion, after he attempted to flee from the agents by jumping into the sea from a cliff. The events took place on Tuesday, when several neighbors alerted to the presence of a man inside a home. According to witnesses, the suspect had accessed the dwelling by jumping between the balconies of different floors.

The educational community views with concern the growing weight of charter schools in the Government's educational policy. The family federation FAPA Mallorca makes the most forceful criticism of it. Its president, Xavier Ferriol, asserts that the Executive has “a very marked line, which is the privatization of education” and cites as examples the new charter lines for Baccalaureate and 0-3 years and the charter decree, which, he claims, “shields charter schools.” He also denounces that, while the drop in birth rates allows for the reduction of lines in public schools, the Government creates charter ones.

Starting this Wednesday, the UIB will host the exhibition 50 years of La Bressola. 50 years sowing the future, an exhibition that reviews the trajectory of this network of schools in Northern Catalonia and its pedagogical project based on linguistic immersion in Catalan, verticality, and cooperative work. The Directorate General for Emergencies and Interior is working on the recovery of normality in the Balearic Islands after the more than 200 incidents recorded in the last few hours, caused by the rainfall, storms, and strong wind that affected the Islands during this Wednesday. Now it is the turn of oleotourism, a concept that the Council of Mallorca wants to exploit through participation in the Oleotourism Spain project. The island institution announced today that the plenary session has approved the accession to the Spanish Association of Olive Tree Municipalities, the entity promoting Oleotourism Spain. These days, everyone is talking about the disastrous results obtained by students in the Spanish state in the PISA tests. It is true that the trend has not been positive for years, but rather the opposite; however, there is one issue that is especially alarming: reading comprehension. For years, the education system has been balancing constant legislative changes, pedagogical experiments, budget cuts, and forced digitalization without achieving the desired results. All this paraphernalia has eclipsed a fundamental issue: school no longer guarantees that students know how to read and write. Degrees are given away and students are passed to the next grade to mask a chilling reality, which is that every year the system churns out students with an ESO degree in hand that is good for nothing more than for the government of the day to exempt itself from the responsibility of having a high school failure rate. Students with an ESO degree incapable of maintaining a basic level conversation in Catalan; students with an ESO degree who do not know how to locate continents on a map; students with an ESO degree who do not know what a percentage is; students with an ESO degree who cannot link two sentences in English and now, with all of you, the icing on the cake: students with an ESO –or high school– degree who do not understand what they read. Unfortunately, it seems that the system is no longer designed to educate children, but to look after them while their parents are at work.While the law asks teachers to train critical citizens, to evaluate competencies such as ‘learning to learn’ and to prepare students for the world of the future –a delirious abstraction– the reality is that the educational system is not a priority for political leaders. What future awaits all those who are not capable of understanding a short text? How is someone supposed to learn for themselves if they do not have the minimum literacy skills developed? Who will be the great beneficiary if, tomorrow, a worker is not even capable of understanding what their employment contract says? Who does it benefit that the public education system is in decline?It does not seem that the LOMLOE has helped much to improve the situation or to facilitate the work of teachers – whoever has read any of the evaluation criteria stipulated therein will know what we are talking about. Likewise, the implementation of some pedagogical approaches has not achieved, for the moment, much more than burdening teachers with bureaucracy. As if all this were not enough, artificial intelligence will arrive in schools to definitively suppress natural intelligence and, incidentally, will allow some to do business with new 'training' for teachers.It is true that the current educational model is much more ambitious than that of past times: it attempts to reach everyone, respect the family and personal situations of each child, adapt to the rhythm and needs of each student… But to achieve all this, the ground must be prepared: increase investment in education, dignify the role of teachers, implement realistic laws, and, ultimately, imbue the public education system with an authority and prestige that, as of now, it has lost. Lamentations and the patches with which public school has been mended over the last decades are of little use. An ESO degree that does not guarantee that the student has basic knowledge has the same value as a thirty-euro bill. Let's not fool ourselves; we will not get out of this situation by inertia or without making structural changes. It is necessary –more than ever, perhaps– that all parties involved –government, opposition, teachers, families, citizens committed to a better future (excuse the abstraction)– fight for the public education system to be a guarantee of knowledge and academic quality.

Palma hosts this Friday, September 11, the free concert by Rels B, one of the main events of the Diada de Mallorca. In the summer of 1967, Michael Caine arrived in Portals Vells to shoot a film set in Greece. It was not the initial plan. Algaida will become this weekend a great open-air art space on the occasion of the tenth edition of Algaid'Art. At 82 years old, Joan Pons Gost from sa Pobla looks at the calluses on his hands and reviews his five decades working as a stonemason. “I learned the trade in 1957, at 13 years old. I had lost my father when I was very young, and to help the family economy, I started as a laborer in different renovations that were being done within the same municipality of sa Pobla. With a cart, they sent me up and down to fetch material. Later they taught me how to make cement and lay blocks.”

Expectation? People coming from abroad to witness a very infrequent phenomenon? Nothing new. Another August, but this one 121 years ago, Mallorca became an international focus of attraction for a total solar eclipse, with the presence of six scientific collectives from four countries and three hundred Italian tourists who traveled expressly to the island to witness this exceptional phenomenon. In this itinerary, we explore the surroundings of Santa Eugènia to travel along part of its oldest road network and discover some of the most representative villages of the municipality, Les Coves and Les Olleries, for their history and heritage. The following route is a long but quiet walk between the town of Artà and the hermitage of Betlem. A linear itinerary that crosses one of the most intense cultural landscapes of the gregal of the island of Mallorca: paths and estates with history, such as Son Sureda and Can Canals, which in Muslim times constituted the farmstead of Benimira; narrow and elongated scrublands with an interesting and very fragile natural heritage; a beautiful and interesting toponymy that reveals uses, customs, and legends closely linked to the territory, such as the rock of the hermit Macari and the military observatory of La Coassa. Joan Castelló Guasch collected in Rondaies de Formentera (1976) the story of two sisters who “if one was envious, the other was even more so; and ill-spoken, which is not for saying.” The drama began when, after the mother's death, instead of making the eldest heir, as was customary, and leaving 'her rightful share' to the youngest, she divided everything – property and houses – equally between the two. Every now and then they had fights and arguments, each time more inflamed. “Well, you'll see that one day when the dispute was more heated than ever, the youngest let loose in a bad way. And she ended up saying to the eldest: ‘May you have a bad end, and your property too.’ ‘What you wish for, may you have!’, she replied”. In the end, a large and strong wave swept everything away. It submerged the property from top to bottom, burying houses and sisters and everything under the water.

In this itinerary we explore the beginning of the Artà-Lluc route, the GR 222. A long-distance trail – one of the four existing in the Balearic Islands – that proposes to link the Llevant mountains and the natural park with the central area of the Tramuntana mountain range, declared a world heritage site by Unesco in the category of cultural landscape. Along the way we find a great variety of environments, some of great uniqueness, such as the almost virgin coast of the Llevant peninsula, the dune areas of the Bay of Alcúdia and the terraced slopes of the Caimari mountains.

On this route we travel to the southern tip of the island of Mallorca, which is also the driest area of Mallorcan geography. The idea is to take a walk along the Llubi coast of Sa Vallet, an old subdivision of La Vall, owned by the Marquis of Palmer, which in 1919 the banker Joan March bought, between the Ses Salines lighthouse and Cala en Tugores, on the border of the municipality of Santanyí with Ses Salines. We find a numerous toponymy here, mostly collected by the philologist Cosme Aguiló Adrover (Santanyí, 1950) in his doctoral thesis published in 2007. Place names collected by tearing shoe soles, because it is only by walking in the company of oral sources that this treasure is discovered, which is a very valuable intangible heritage of our land. Since the earthquake, three years ago now, she has lived in a tent in a camp without basic services. Water arrives intermittently, and electricity depends on a few solar panels that are often covered by the dust and debris stirred up by the strong winds of the high mountains.

On the ship Winnipeg, the children were the only privileged ones. The ship set sail in August 1939 from France bound for Valparaíso (Chile) with more than 2,200 exiled republicans supported by the poet Pablo Neruda. It was a cargo ship that was only intended for a hundred passengers. The exiles slept in the belly of the ship and had to work to keep the ship running. The Winnipeg was also the playground for Lola Patau, a five-year-old girl who now, at 92 years old, tells the story of her parents, who fled the Francoist repression after the Spanish Civil War. Patau narrates the years of exile with a smile. Chile became "a home”, she says, while holding a folder full of old press clippings and yellowed photographs.

This is the postcard that the painter and pedagogue Susina Amat i Juvé (Barcelona, 1912-1983) sent on July 20, 1971, from the Catalan Pyrenees, to Mercè Rodoreda (Barcelona, 1908 - Girona, 1983), whom she had become friends with when they worked at the Propaganda Commissariat of the Generalitat, in the middle of the Civil War. The author, who at that time was finalizing one of her most emblematic novels, Broken mirror (1974), he replied to her from Vienna three weeks later to let her know about the difficult time he was going through: "I have been [sic] in Vienna for about four months, where a person very dear to me is dying little by little after a couple of brain surgeries".

Joan Miquel Oliver begins his literary comeback with a new literary work that confirms, amplifies, and enlarges his unique worldview of the world and the bubble: La vida no són matemàtiques at La Magrana. It is, in effect, a book that is difficult to categorize and, precisely for that reason, decidedly stimulating. More than a conventional succession of stories, the volume is built upon occurrences, anecdotes, intuitions, obsessions, discoveries, whims, jokes, pranks, and small epiphanies that unfold with an unbribable freedom. To say they are occurrences is, by no means, an objection: it is a way of stating and recognizing the singularity of a literature that does not need to submit to narrative conventions to end up being original. Oliver writes like someone opening unexpected windows to reality and letting in everything that usually remains off-camera. And in this highly personal universe, there can appear, with the same naturalness, the Alaska kiosk, the missed teacher Toni Artigues, Alexandra Schneider, and Jaume Ripoll, from Filmin, both turned into key pieces of a personal universe in which the daily, the absurd, the drift, and the revelation coexist with the joy of a festival.There is in this work a grace and a wit that are deeply Majorcan, but which Joan Miquel Oliver takes towards a space of his own, a kind of viticulture surrealism in which reality seems to have been slightly displaced from its usual axis. In this sense, the creative operation connects with that of Alice Rohrwacher, capable of capturing certain Italian essences without ever turning them into postcards. Oliver reaches similar milestones with Majorca and his beloved haunts: he gleans the absurdity, the chaos, the tenderness, the decadence, the bad temper, and he does so with the strange capacity to alchemically transform moth-eaten traditionalism into delicious delirium that has not been fully exploited until now. Whoever reads it may be bewildered, evidently, because he does not always offer the usual coordinates of narratology or diarism, but this bewilderment is precisely a virtue: it forces one to abandon expectations, to let oneself be carried away, and to accept that literature can also consist of looking at the world from unsuspected angles. And this, in a headlong literature like ours, is a rarity that should be celebrated.

In Teoria de gèneres, the second book by Josep Girós (Tarragona, 1968), the architect and writer focuses on a temptation as old as the human being: to classify what they do not understand. Literature does not escape this either: novel, poetry, essay, thriller, autobiography, science fiction... Genres, subgenres, labels or compartments that promise to guide us before opening a book and that, often, only serve to tell us what we should expect from them. Girós writes precisely against this need to put everything in its place. The author plays with the very idea of classifying until it wavers. And he does so with a paradox that runs throughout the book: he plays at classifying while questioning classification. Instead of accepting the academic divisions of genres, he proposes his own view, deliberately eccentric, and turns literary taxonomy into a playground. The book does not seek to resolve what a novel, a poem, or an essay is, but rather to ask why knowing it calms us. Classifying a book is also domesticating it: anticipating it, reducing its mystery. Girós seems to suspect that literature begins to lose something just at the moment we believe we have understood it. Theory of genres moves away from the solemn literary essay, the kind that seems to demand that the reader maintain a certain gravity even when talking about books. Here, there is no desire to build a definitive system or to erect a new Bible of classification. The proposal is more interesting when it resists being turned into doctrine. And here one of its best weapons appears: humor. Not as an ornament, but as a way of thinking. Girós uses the joke to dismantle the formality with which we often speak of literature and culture, this ridiculous need to turn any reading experience into an operation of prestige. Theory of genres is less a manual than a provocation. It does not offer a compass so that the reader does not get lost, but rather suggests a much more uncomfortable idea: perhaps getting lost is, in fact, the best way to read. The paradox is delightful: to rebel against classifications, Girós must manufacture others (unfinished narratives, admirably incomprehensible narratives, narratives translated more than once into Catalan, etc.). The game also has rules, but these do not intend to imprison literature, but rather to demonstrate that every border is provisional, artificial, and revisable.This awareness saves Gender Theory from becoming a mere catalog of eccentricities. Beneath the game lies a deeper question: what happens when we stop reading to confirm what we already knew? In an era in which algorithms increasingly decide what we read, leaving room for error and surprise is almost an act of resistance. Josep Girós does not ask us to abandon genres, but rather not to turn them into borders. The most vibrant literature has always been a bit of a smuggler: it enters territories that do not belong to it, mixes registers, steals forms, and disobeys the labels that try to contain it. After all, the book starts from an apparently modest question and ends up touching on an essential issue: to what extent do we need to order the world to be able to inhabit it? Girós responds with a proposal that prefers the crack to the wall, curiosity to certainty, and disorder to the tranquility of having everything classified. Perhaps reading does not consist of knowing which shelf we should put a book on. Perhaps it consists of taking it off the shelf and seeing what happens.

The company Blai Peris, from Bot (Terra Alta), wants to demonstrate that innovation can also be applied to the food that has civilized humanity since ancient times, olives. “The idea of personalizing them came to me while thinking about what we could do with our olives to take a step further in the market. Then I proposed to my cousin to try it with his laser machine, and the surprise was to verify that yes, it worked on the first try,” explains Àlex Peris, who together with his brother Blai is at the head of the business.
