The left of the PSOE in the Balearic Islands will run united in the general elections of the upcoming November 29th. Ara MÉS and Podem Illes Balears reached an agreement this Sunday to present themselves jointly in the elections, after negotiations between both formations ended without an understanding when the electoral coalition had to be registered. The pact finally allows for the incorporation of Podem into the candidacy, with Lucía Muñoz as number three on the list for Congress, as an independent.
The agreement comes after Ara MÉS formalized the coalition without Podem, given the impossibility of closing negotiations within the established deadline. Thus, a candidacy that had initially been composed of MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca, Ara Eivissa, Esquerra Unida de les Illes Balears, and Sumar now also includes the purple party.
The agreed formula allows for overcoming the initial disagreement without modifying, as the formations have explained, the respect for the political autonomy and identity of each of the organizations. The incorporation of Lucía Muñoz as an independent in the third place on the list is the realization of this understanding.
The agreement is also framed within the line of collaboration and non-open competition with Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), which has allowed for finding a unique formula for the Balearic Islands, adapted to the political and territorial particularities of the Islands.
“All the forces have understood that the Islands have a particular political and territorial reality, which requires dialogue, generosity, and the capacity to reach agreements,” highlighted Carme Gomila.
Gomila remarked that “this understanding demonstrates that it is possible to build spaces of cooperation based on respect for the autonomy and identity of each organization, without renouncing one's own political projects.” As she added, the agreement allows for the materialization of a single ballot for the forces of this political space in the Balearic Islands.
In this way, Ara MÉS and Podem close the disagreement that had prevented them from running together at the time of registering the coalition. The candidacy will finally bring together the six formations and will be presented in the November 29 general elections with Lucía Muñoz in the third position on the list.
