Clara Ruiz begins her day while it is still dark. She wakes up at 6 a.m., gets ready, leaves home, and walks for half an hour to Ciutat Antiga, an outsourced municipal nursery school in Palma, where she works as a 0-3 year old teacher. At 7:30 a.m., the early morning service begins: she organizes the day, monitors the children's arrival, and assists families if there is any problem that requires help.

About a hundred 0-3 educators protested this Tuesday in front of the Parliament during the strike day called in the sector, which, according to the follow-up data provided at 11:00 AM —with 74% of centers reporting—, has a 21% turnout across the Balearic Islands. By island, the impact is 20.39% in Mallorca, 41.99% in Menorca, 9.95% in Ibiza, and 6.45% in Formentera. For their part, the unions report a higher impact of the strike: 60% in Mallorca, 80% in Menorca, 40% in Ibiza, and 60% in Formentera. The workers gathered in front of the Chamber while the plenary session was being held to demand improvements in their working conditions and in the care of children. The demonstrators displayed signs with messages such as '0-3 is for educating, not babysitting', 'Our agreement, our future', 'Canteen regulations', and 'Childhood cannot be cared for in a rush', among others.

STEI demands the resignation of the Director General of Early Childhood, Neus Riera, due to the management of the 49 new Early Childhood Education Technician (TEI) positions created for the 2026-2027 academic year. The union considers that the Ministry of Education has managed these positions in a “disastrous” manner and denounces that the professionals have not been appointed to vacancies for the entire school year. According to STEI, this week Riera was scheduled to appear before the Sectoral Board of General Services, at the union's request, to provide explanations regarding the situation. Specifically, she was to explain why the 49 new TEI positions have not been filled with vacancy appointments. Ultimately, according to the union, the Director General did not appear and submitted a written statement with her explanations.

The workers of the outsourced nursery schools of the Palma City Council said "enough is enough" this Thursday at the municipal plenary session, where they denounced the delays in the tendering of the new contract and the impact they have on their salaries and the conditions of care for the children. "From January to September, nine months have passed," they pointed out. During this time, they claim that each worker has failed to receive between 4,500 and 5,400 euros. "This is what it means for us that the deadlines are extended," they remarked. The workers appeared with the support of the unions CCOO and UGT.

The Department of Education approved the facilities of the Sagrat Cor school to launch the new 0-3 cycle, even though the center has started the school year with the classrooms that are supposed to host the youngest children still unfinished. Provisionally, the children have been placed in a space divided by furniture. Regarding the playground enabled for the little ones, the educators have decided not to use it due to the state it is in. "It is suitable for keeping animals, not children," claim sources familiar with the state of the playground.

The workers of the nursery schools demand that Education act against the centers that would have advanced the start of the school year calendar and that, according to their complaints, are applying criteria different from those officially established. The Xarxa 0-3, in a statement signed by a large part of the unions and collectives in the sector, warns that some centers would be following the indications of some employers and offering families different dates to start the adaptation period. Faced with this situation, the workers demand that the General Directorate of Early Childhood intervene immediately to ensure that all centers comply with the same instructions.

The PSIB-PSOE denounced this Monday in Algaida that Marga Prohens' government prioritizes subsidized nursery schools over municipal ones and has called for local administrations to receive the same support to be able to assume the expenses derived from education for 0 to 3 year olds. The socialist candidate for the presidency of the Consell de Mallorca, Amanda Fernàndez, made these statements in front of the Flor de Murta municipal nursery school, accompanied by the mayor of Algaida, Marga Fullana, and socialist mayors from Mallorca.

The trade unions CCOO, UGT and STEI Intersindical have announced the postponement of the strike for 0-3 year olds' education scheduled for this Tuesday, June 2. The organizations explain that the decision has been made "out of strict responsibility" and to guarantee the "legal protection of workers".
