Palma will return to the streets against the airport's growth. The Platform against the Airport Expansion has joined the mobilizations called for next September 20th in Barcelona and Ibiza to demand that airport expansion projects and tourism promotion policies, which, according to the entities, fuel the growth of visitor arrivals to the Islands, be stopped.

The National Police have arrested a man for allegedly assaulting a worker at Palma airport, whom he reportedly caused to fracture both wrists following a conflict in the check-in area.

The Spanish government has vetoed the processing of the bill for airport co-management alleging that it could economically harm Aena. The Congress of Deputies will not be able to debate and vote on it if the Bureau, presided over by Francina Armengol, does not lift this veto. With the document, Pedro Sánchez’s executive says ‘no’ to the initiative that would allow the Islands to intervene in the management of arrivals in a context of mass tourism.

A Palma airport worker is on sick leave after being assaulted by a passenger who had informed her that she could not properly prove the resident discount. According to the Federation of Mobility and Consumer Services of UGT Balearic Islands, the passenger hit the worker with a mobile phone on the head, in the ear and shoulder area.

Although public discourse advocates for distributing tourists during winter and reducing arrivals or, at least, preventing an increase in summer, reality is stubborn: in July 2026, and throughout the high season, Palma airport has broken records. With 19.6 million passengers achieved by July, Son Sant Joan confirms that the increase is not stopping and that, moreover, it is concentrated between May and July, awaiting what may happen during August.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has initiated the procedures to modify the official name of the current Palma de Mallorca Airport, which will be renamed Palma-Mallorca Airport. The Obra Cultural Balear (OCB) has expressed its satisfaction with the decision, as it considers that it finally adapts the name of the infrastructure to the official toponymy and puts an end to a designation it describes as illegal.

Aena's works council at Menorca airport has warned that it does not rule out calling a strike during the August 15th long weekend if management maintains its stance and does not open negotiations to strengthen the workforce. The mobilization comes after reporting that the increase in passengers and operations in recent years has not been accompanied by an increase in staff.

It has been a long time since the Balearic Islands became a consumer postcard. Three weeks ago, on the facade of the complex, there was also a giant advertising banner from the German financial group Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe. It promoted Wero, an instant payment application similar to Bizum. The slogan used had a double meaning: 'Was auf Malle passiert, wird auf Malle beglichen’ (‘what happens in Mallorca, is settled in Mallorca’). The phrase refers to the famous slogan of the US 'sin city': 'what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas'. 'Malle’, the substitute for Vegas, is a very common colloquial term in Germany to refer to Mallorca as an emblem of excess tourism.

A group of activists from the Platform Against Airport Expansion and SOS Residents held a protest at Palma Airport this Friday, coinciding with the inauguration of the new air route connecting Mallorca with Dubai. The demonstrators staged an "ironic welcome" for the first passengers of the flight to denounce the environmental and social impact that, in their opinion, the opening of new international connections to the island entails.

"The lesson of the day is extraordinary," thus expressed the Minister of Tourism of the Government, Jaume Bauzà, after learning that the German bank, which was advertised with the controversial message on a billboard located at Palma airport, will remove it. Bauzà thanked the company this Monday for its decision to take down the advertising billboard: "Sparkassen listens to the residents' complaints, understands the discomfort, and removes the billboard," he added in a post on his X profile. On the other hand, the minister was particularly forceful with Aena, to whom he reproached a lack of education. "Today common sense has arrived from Germany. We already had arrogance here," he pointed out.

The new train between Palma and Llucmajor will begin construction in 2028 and, if the planned deadlines are met, will become operational in 2032. The infrastructure will connect a dozen neighborhoods in the two municipalities and will allow travel to Palma airport in just over ten minutes.

In September 2025, a non-binding resolution from the People's Party (PP) regarding airports was approved, as well as a proposed organic law, initiated by the MÉS parties for Mallorca and Menorca, for the creation of an Airport Authority for the Balearic Islands, which is currently under parliamentary review. However, in my opinion, this debate is neither serious nor objective. Airport management is a complex issue that cannot be analyzed or addressed based on prejudice or simplistic assumptions.

The Balearic Islands Transport (TIB) buses connecting the Calvià, Inca, Manacor, Sa Pobla, Alcúdia, Llucmajor, and Campos area with Son Sant Joan Airport will offer a regular service year-round, even during the off-season, as announced this Thursday by the Minister of Housing, Mobility, and Territory, José Luis Mat. This service will begin this Saturday on lines A11 (Camp de Mar-Airport), A33 (from the Port of Alcúdia), A43 (Manacor), and A51 (Campos). Buses will run every hour to every hour and 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on the line. The first buses will depart between 4:15 and 4:40 a.m. for the airport, and the last buses will leave Son Sant Joan between 10:30 and 11:40 p.m. The four lines will have an average of between 26 and 38 daily trips. Mateo emphasized that this is the first time a regular service has been offered on the four Aerotib bus lines during the off-season and from Monday to Sunday. The objective of this initiative is to "respond to the demand of citizens" and guarantee connectivity between the main population centers of Mallorca and the airport. According to the manager of the Mallorca Transport Consortium (CTM), Luisa Serra, the Aerotib service had not been offered during the off-season in the last five years, and in the three years prior, from 2017 to 2019, it was offered with a maximum of eight trips per day. These changes have been made possible thanks to the modification of the concessions of the bus service. With the change in the three contracts, the service offering goes from 16.5 million kilometers (included in the contracts initiated in 2021) to 24.6 million annually in the modification, which represents an increase of almost 50% of the service initially planned.

The Balearic Cultural Organization (OBC) approached the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to change the official name of Palma de Mallorca Airport to "Palma Airport." To reinforce this request, the OCB met with the airport director, Tomás Melgar.

Faced with the "complete disconnect" between airport policy, which in recent years has done nothing but expand flights and facilitate the entry of tourists to the islands, and policies to contain (the term the PP uses to avoid talking about degrowth) overcrowding in the territory, MÁS por Mallorca and Más por Menorca have gotten to work. The eco-sovereignty movement will defend a bill this Tuesday in plenary session to demand that airport authority be transferred to the government. This is a way to limit Aena, the commercial company that manages them, after receiving 15.9 million visitors to 18.7 million between 2014 and 2024, according to data from the INE (National Institute of Statistics and Census). The law has the approval of the PP, at least to allow its processing, while the PSIB (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) is hesitant.

The Platform Against the Expansion of Palma Airport and several neighborhood and environmental associations demanded this Saturday a ban on night flights to Son Sant Joan as part of the International Day to End These Operations, promoted by the European network Stay Grounded.
