The video shows a pedestrian being run over at a crosswalk and builds an unequivocal narrative: the fault lies with the pedestrian who is distracted looking at their mobile phone. From Sineu en Bici i a Peu we want to explain why this campaign is not only wrong, but points in the exact opposite direction to what we need if we want safer streets for people.

"Investing in Mallorca" was one of the major campaign promises of the President of the Council of Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés. Halfway through his term, Galmés proclaimed that his government had fulfilled "more than 80% of its roadmap." But this major campaign promise has yet to be delivered, and the countdown to the next elections has begun.

In October 2025, consumption reached 413,700 MWh, 7.9% more than the previous year, and the cumulative figure for January-November rose by 3.9%. This sustained trend shows that the Balearic Islands are unable to break free from an inertia based on shattering resource consumption records, even with the massive incorporation of self-consumption solar systems. The Islands face 2026 with the urgent need to revise their production and territorial model, because otherwise, the climate targets for 2030 and 2050 will be difficult to achieve.

Only a year and a half remains in his term, and just one peak tourist season before the 2026 elections. It is at this point that his flagship proposal, limiting vehicle access to Mallorca, could gain greater visibility if implemented. However, this possibility is being complicated by the veto of Vox, with whom, despite the split in the Balearic Parliament, he continues to govern the island institution. Sources within the institution insist that they are still negotiating with the other groups to bring their proposal to the Parliament, but this process seems to be slowing down. Even so, the People's Party (PP) is not yet open to accepting the Socialist Party's (PSIB) offer to jointly approve the bill with the same objective that the Socialists have registered in the Parliament.

Cars are encroaching on sidewalks, blocking pedestrian access. Peatones Mallorca (Pedestrians Mallorca) recently posted a video on Instagram showing the difficulties a mother with a stroller faces trying to walk her child in her neighborhood, located around Isidre Llaurador Street. With this footage, the organization denounces this "shameful" problem, which is repeated in other neighborhoods and towns, and argues that "there are too many cars and not enough planning."

The recently presented study on the carrying capacity of Menorcan roads proposes only a 1.8% reduction in vehicle traffic compared to last year. This measure has almost no impact and clashes head-on with the study conducted by the left in 2023, shortly before losing the island's government, which estimated the excess number of cars on the road network in summer at 30%. Furthermore, the limitation will not begin to be applied until next summer, although Article 28 of the Biosphere Reserve Law has empowered Menorca to take measures in this regard for three years.

Summer is starting with a growing forecast for tourist arrivals, but with less water and less decarbonization and waste separation than expected. It will also be the last Balearic island to implement measures to reduce vehicle traffic in the summer, although the PP government in the Consell recognizes that the roads are already much more saturated than the island's current road network can absorb. Some indicators of the environmental strategy it pledged to implement by 2030 have even regressed. This is, today, the environmental snapshot of Menorca.
