Men, generally speaking, care very little about feminism. Some are outright opposed, saying that women are exaggerating, or that the grievances and inequalities they claim are no longer justified in an egalitarian and democratic society, or that it's all just a charade to look good or to collect subsidies by playing the victim. Others try to understand it beyond International Women's Day and attempt to bring some sense to a set of demands that, in my opinion, make perfect sense, especially when we see the statistics on domestic and sexual violence, or the glaring economic inequalities. However, it's difficult for a man to feel directly involved in these demands. It's as if the women around us were a foreign country with its own wars, miseries, and injustices, which we can understand, but we're not expected to do more than sympathize from afar and not show ourselves to be too supportive—or complicit—with the oppressors. Even among younger generations, this issue seems to have a bad reputation, as if it were a settled debate, or as if women don't need any help or support, or as if feminism itself creates the problem by highlighting a set of inequalities that should already be invisible. There are also some women who feel more comfortable thinking of the battle as already won, or as unnecessary or awkwardly framed. Or who find the traditionally domestic role of women liberating and wonderful, a promised land lost. However, even if we were to approach the solution from a left-wing perspective, it's often unclear what kind of policies could be implemented.

Perhaps having lived between different cultures and identities, even though she didn't choose it, has given her a maturity and an ability to analyze the world that is unusual for her age. Her story is reminiscent of the "three rebellious turns" that Maria Mercè Marçal spoke of in her famous poem. When asked where she's from, she doesn't have a simple answer. Her identity shifts between places, languages, and cultures: the Amazigh of her family and the Mallorcan of the street. She was born in Algeciras, but grew up in Mallorca, in Campos, where she has spent her entire life. "When people ask me where we're from, I don't have a single answer," she explains. "I was born in Andalusia, but I've lived my whole life in Mallorca. I learned to speak Catalan here, my friends are here, I went to high school here… basically, I grew up here."

I'd be mortified to have to teach that amazing woman anything. At 26, she has the same survival instinct as a single, divorced mother of four. She seems to have been born with half her life already lived, as if adulthood arrived at 18. "It's a miracle I turned out so well," she always tells me, with that dark humor that came with her Brazilian leg. And it's true. I'd like to say I'd defend her against anything and anyone, but the truth is, she's never given me the chance. She's smart, quick-witted, and vibrant. Her life is like a "Mexican soap opera"—she also says—but she outruns the misfortunes. Perhaps that's why she's been blessed with a very small bust, but also with a sharp eye and a protective mind, which lead almost everyone to mistake her for something she's not and—quickly—realize it. In fact, my favorite photo in the world is one where we appear side by side – me, at 10 years old, and her, at 6 – with such a disproportionate level of physical development that next to her, I look like a giant, about to crush a dwarf.

It was actually a tender locomotive, meaning it carried both coal and water on the same chassis, and therefore didn't have a separate tender car towed by larger locomotives. It began to slip on the wet tracks with a squeal of iron on iron; a thick cloud of black smoke filled the platforms of Palma Central Station. The worst part—and what makes me even more the person I would have hated to be—is that it's therapeutic. For the two hours my ritual lasts, I'm only focused on this. It's not exactly an achievement, even though I've discovered a new way to meditate. It's just that having three different food preparations going forces you to be quite focused. It terrifies me to think that I've found satisfaction in this hyper-productivity: having half the week's meals sorted in the middle of the afternoon. What a shame.
