The Llibres Colom bookstore in Palma will close its doors at the end of October after 61 years of history. The establishment, located in the square known as Plaça dels Patins, has not found anyone to take over before the retirement of the person in charge, Marian Colom.

Fausto Puerto Quetglas (Manacor, 1975), owner of the Món de Llibres bookstore in Manacor, has just published Abans que vingui la fosca (Angle Editorial, 2026), his first novel. A narrative in three chapters that revolve around the little-known figure of the German philosopher Philipp Mainländer, father of nihilism and defender of the theory of the suicide of God and the consequent helplessness of man in the universe. His life and death move some characters, separated in time, who try to find some answer and meaning before the darkness. This Friday, September 18, at 7:30 p.m. he presents it at the church of the Sant Vicenç cloister.

"We no longer know what else we can do: banners, resist, demonstrations... But if you take one step further, like graffiti, they expose you in the media and come looking for you at your home; I don't know what else we can do." The indignation belongs to Margalida Castell, manager of the Quart Creixent bookstore, following the arrest of two young women for graffiti against tourist overcrowding in Santa Maria. Faced with this situation, the bookstore has reinforced the distribution of SOS Residents banners, which have almost run out after the Civil Guard's intervention.

Quart Creixent officially launched its participation in the project supporting independent bookstores, spearheaded by Abacus and La22 of Girona, this Thursday. The event, held at the bookstore, drew around one hundred people and highlighted the central role of independent bookstores in the cultural life of the island and the country. The initiative had been previously announced and was officially presented to the community this Thursday.

Abacus is closing its Palma store with the aim of concentrating its activity on the island through the historic Quart Creixent bookstore, thus strengthening "an independent bookstore with deep roots, a long history, and a strong cultural commitment." As detailed in a press release, this decision coincides with Quart Creixent joining the project led by Abacus Cooperativa and La22, an initiative supporting the network of independent bookstores. The bookstores explained that this new alliance will allow them to share resources, experiences, and tools to consolidate a strong network of bookstores, capable of facing the challenges of the sector and ensuring the continuity of cultural projects with their own distinct identity. Anna Nicolau, the project director, emphasized that "this new phase seeks to both highlight and reaffirm the essential role of independent bookstores as cultural meeting points, spaces for debate and social cohesion, and as a spearhead in promoting reading and knowledge throughout the community."
