PalmaThe cost of housing in the Balearic Islands pushes a total of 16,195 workers into a situation of poverty, according to a report made public this Tuesday by the NGO Oxfam Intermón. The study, titled When working is not enough: the impact of housing costs on working poverty, reflects that the poverty rate in the Archipelago stands at 6.12% before taking into account the money spent on housing, compared to 8.84% after, 2.72 points higher.
By type, where working poverty is most apparent is in homes rented at market price, as it skyrockets between before and after payment: from 7.32% to 17.31% (9.99 points higher). In the case of being an owner with a mortgage in the Balearic Islands, working poverty goes from 2.64% before the cost, to 3.26% after, 0.62 points higher.
It only decreases among owners without a mortgage, as it goes from 7.11% before the housing payment to 6.91% after, which translates to 0.20 points lower.
The NGO has highlighted that the sampling of the data from the Balearic Islands, extracted from the Living Conditions survey, is insufficient, which is why it has asked to take the results as guidance and not as a basis for drawing conclusions.
