Algaida becomes a great open-air art space with more than 30 exhibition spaces

PalmaAlgaida will become this weekend a great open-air art space on the occasion of the tenth edition of Algaid'Art. The festival of the arts will be held this Saturday, September 12th, and Sunday, September 13th, and will bring together hundreds of artists in more than 30 exhibition spaces spread throughout the municipality.

Painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, installations, and other disciplines will share the spotlight with a program of musical performances and artistic proposals that will occupy streets, squares, and different spaces in Algaida. The participation of artists from various parts of the Mediterranean reinforces, in this tenth edition, the meeting character of the initiative, which claims art as a space to share identities, traditions, and ways of creating.

The exhibitions can be visited on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program will resume on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in the church square with a performance by the School of Music and Dances of Mallorca. On this occasion, the dancers will wear skirts made with works by renowned artists rooted in the Balearic Islands.

Art created by many hands

Among the proposals of the tenth edition, ‘Weaving villages’ stands out, a collective creation project that focuses on the bonds between communities through art. The initiative presents a set of mandalas made in a participatory way by citizens of Algaida, Pina, and Randa, as well as by the members of the Women's Association of Els Poblets, in Dénia (Alicante). The pieces have been created by many hands and aim to symbolize participation, cooperation, and connection between villages. The project thus establishes a network between territories and people through an accessible and community-based artistic practice.

Clay tiles between tradition and contemporary art

Another of the outstanding collective projects is an artistic intervention with clay tiles, which can be visited in the rectory courtyard. The proposal starts from a traditional element of the popular and artisan culture of Mallorca, still present in some potteries and workshops on the island, to turn it into a medium for contemporary creation. Artists from the Balearic Islands and from different territories of the Mediterranean basin participate in it, in a proposal that brings into dialogue the artisan tradition and new artistic perspectives.

At the Casal Pere Capellà, the exhibition Popular Festivals will bring together works by artists from the Islands and the Mediterranean around the traditional celebrations of different territories. The Town Hall, for its part, will host several exhibitions, among which there is an exhibition of popular ceramics and other utensils donated to the Algaida City Council by Manel Domènech. These are pieces of popular ceramics from the end of the 18th and 19th centuries that are currently in the process of cataloging.

Music to complete the feast of the arts

The artistic program will be completed with various musical performances throughout the weekend. On Saturday evening, the passing ocarina duo formed by Marc García and Carmen Hermoso will tour the exhibition spaces to liven up the night.

At 8:30 p.m., the church of Algaida will host a concert by the UIB Women's Choir, which will propose a musical journey through different eras and territories, from sacred music to popular and contemporary song. There will also be music in the Sitjar square, with a performance by the local group The Coverbos, while Tardes en el Cafè will offer pop music in the square.

The organization champions Algaid'Art as a proposal that goes beyond an art exhibition and aims to bring artistic creation closer to the citizens and turn the municipality into a meeting point for artists, neighbors, and visitors. The initiative is also complemented by the gastronomic offer of the bars and restaurants of Algaida, which during the weekend will be able to welcome visitors who come to the municipality.

The mayor of Algaida, Margalida Fullana, and the Councilor for Culture, Francesc Ramis, consider that the tenth edition "represents a special milestone" for a project that has been growing and incorporating new disciplines, perspectives, and spaces. According to the municipal officials, the participation of the artists and the involvement of the citizens, organizations, and the different agents of the municipality allow for the claim of culture as an element of cohesion, participation, and revitalization. Ten editions later, Algaid'Art thus arrives at a new appointment with the desire to continue making art and culture a shared, participatory experience open to everyone.
