Archaeologist Josep Maria López Garí dies at 61, a benchmark in the defense of heritage in Ibiza

He participated in numerous excavations in the Pitiusas Islands and was the island director of Heritage for the Consell de Eivissa

PalmThe archaeologist Josep Maria López Garí has passed away in Ibiza at the age of 61, as confirmed by various cultural institutions. Born in Palma, he developed much of his career in the Pitiusas, where he became a prominent figure in the study and defense of historical heritage.

López Garí participated in numerous archaeological excavations in Ibiza and Formentera, and contributed to the knowledge and conservation of key sites on the Islands. His work was characterized by constant involvement in the protection of heritage and a rigorous approach to its management.

In addition to fieldwork, he also held institutional responsibilities as insular director of Heritage for the Consell de Ibiza, from where he promoted policies for the conservation and dissemination of the island's historical legacy.

Various entities have highlighted his career and commitment. The Institut d’Estudis Eivissencs (IEE), of which he had been part of the Executive Commission, has emphasized “his dedication to the study and conservation of the Islands' heritage, as well as his commitment to culture”.

For its part, the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera has recalled his “carisma, determination, and fight for heritage”, as well as a personality that made him a recognized figure within the sector.

With his passing, the world of archaeology and heritage management in the Balearic Islands loses one of the voices that, from different fields, contributed to preserving and valuing the historical legacy of the Pitiusas.
