Controversy in Alcudia over a play by Juan Carlos Bestard accused of being sexist
The Socialist group is asking the government for an explanation for including a performance with "sexist content" in the official festival program.
PalmAlcudia City Council has come under fire for including a play in the official program for the Sant Jaume and Sant Crist Triennial festivities, which the council's socialist group has called sexist and chauvinistic.
The performance, performed by Joan Carles Bestard's company and starring the actor himself, has raised eyebrows due to the attitudes and expressions depicted. According to Socialist spokesperson Agüi Lobo, it is "a performance that ridicules women and reinforces degrading stereotypes," all with the institutional support of the City Council. "It is unacceptable that the City Council subsidizes a show that ridicules women," Lobo stated during the last plenary session, addressing the Councilor for Festivals, Àngela Amer.
The Socialist group has denounced that the plot, language, and tone of the play objectify women under the guise of irony, but with a clearly sexist message. Furthermore, they criticize the fact that a show of this nature is given public visibility within the framework of municipal festivals. In a statement, the Socialist Group of Alcudia expressed its "strong condemnation" of this decision by the governing team, and lamented that "the City Council encourages and protects sexist attitudes in a public setting and financed with public resources."
The controversy is aggravated, according to Lobo, by the fact that the cover of the festival program features an image of a woman with her back turned, in the middle of a street in Alcudia, with a white scarf on her head and her arms outstretched in the shape of a cross. "It is an evident contradiction: an apparently respectful image is projected, while the program accommodates discourses that reinforce the most rancid machismo," concluded the spokesperson.
