The Maritime Museum of Mallorca will host 'Latina y Mestral', a project that fuses art and maritime tradition.

The exhibition can be visited from this Friday until September 28.

PalmThe Consell de Mallorca and Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art presented the artistic project this Tuesday Latina and Mestral, by Colombian artist Alberto Baraya, which will open this Friday, July 11, at the Museo Maritimo de Mallorca (Museum of the Sea) in the port of Sóller.

According to a press release from the Consell (Spanish Consell), the work is part of Biennial B, an initiative that promotes interdisciplinary projects between contemporary artists and craft professionals, with a firm commitment to sustainable development, traditional trades, and the Balearic landscape. The objective is to "highlight the cultural wealth of Mallorca through art."

The Vice President of the Consell and Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, explained that Latina and Mestral It is "a performative and pictorial project" that Baraya developed aboard the Brandó, a traditional Mallorcan lute. During the voyage, which departed from Portitxol and reached the quarries of La Seu, the artist painted in situ A sailing sail specially made for the occasion.

The director of Es Baluard, David Barro, highlighted that the work "connects contemporary art with Mallorca's nautical and landscape tradition" and "recovers painting in motion," in an experience in which landscape, navigation, and artistic creation merge. The result of this artistic journey can be seen at the Museo del Mar in Puerto de Sóller until September 28, where the painted sails and a documentary video of the creative process will be exhibited.
