"There's no more capacity, people live in Menorca": The new song against overcrowding.
Menorcan artists have joined forces to carry out this new protest and demand changes in the tourism model.
PalmMenorca's leading artists have come together to create It would be convenient, a song that denounces the overcrowding of tourists on the island: "There's no more capacity / people live in Menorca." The artists hope it will become the "alternative soundtrack for the Menorcan summer." "We don't want to ignore the overcrowding we suffer on the island, but we can complain through singing, something we know how to do very well here," they explained.
The song, which features the vocals of singer Anna Ferrer, Verlaat, and Frank Pons (Pel de Gall), also features the involvement of more than a dozen musicians from the Bon Ball Tenim brass band. The song was produced and arranged by Àngel Gelabert, with mixing by Genís Trani, and the wind instruments were recorded by Toni Pons (EduSound).
The song has direct lyrics, with a very clear message: it's important to put limits on tourism because the lives of residents have become unsustainable. "We'll say no to your season / if it's this saturated / there's no more capacity / people live in Menorca" is one of the verses that can be heard throughout a song that points to the problems of housing, overcrowding, the loss of local commerce, the elitism of towns, the degradation of the landscape and the scarcity; in general, the collapse.
In another fragment of the song they denounce that Menorca was "a virgin island by flag" and now the Menorcans "live on the sidewalk." "The cruise ships block the views / the sea seems like a highway / it would be better to say no," they sing. "Tourism is coming in droves / we can't buy a place / by bus on the highway / parking drives us crazy / it would be better to say no," they denounce in another fragment of the song.
The proposal reads like a manifesto, a song that is appropriate if what you want is to start putting limits on touristification and return a livable life to those who live on the island.
So far, only the single, but the video clip for the song will also be released on July 8th: a collective action in which more than fifty people participate.
