PalmThe Governing Council has approved an agreement that allows, "on an exceptional and temporary basis," to increase the teaching load of teaching staff at state-subsidized schools in subjects considered difficult to cover within ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education), FP (Vocational Training), and Baccalaureate (Baccalaureate).

The Ministry of Education and Universities has identified fifteen subjects that are difficult to cover in Secondary and Baccalaureate education (Mathematics, Technology, and Physics, among others) and various subjects in Vocational Training cycles.

Teacher shortage

This measure is part of Article 30.2 of Law 6/2025, of July 23, on the general budget of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, which sets a maximum limit of public funding for a full-time ordinary day of twenty-three hours of weekly teaching. However, the regulations establish the possibility of exceeding this limit, upon request from the school and authorization from the General Directorate of Teaching Staff and State-subsidized Schools, to guarantee coverage of subjects where there is a shortage of qualified teachers.

Faced with this situation, the Ministry of Education and Universities has already adopted measures such as providing extraordinary services outside of regular hours in public schools. "Now, with this agreement, we also aim to respond to the state-subsidized sector, taking advantage of the availability of qualified teachers to strengthen teaching in the most affected subjects," explains the Government.
