PalmaA demonstration called by union representatives from USO Balears has brought together workers from the subsidized education sector this Tuesday in front of the government delegation in the Balearic Islands to demand the equalization of working conditions with public schools, especially regarding teaching hours and workload.

During the protest, attendees have asserted their position with chants such as “educational equality, equality of rights”, “equal real teaching load”, and “equal treatment in public schools”. They also argued that “the subsidized sector cannot be left behind” and concluded their proclamations with the chant “yes, yes, the subsidized sector is here now”.

Pending Congress

In statements during the rally, the USO Balears representative, Joan Miquel Llabres, criticized that political negotiations are focused exclusively on public education. “In Congress, a bill is being debated that only talks about public schools. We are left out of the improvements, and that's why we are taking to the streets,” he stated. The union representative demanded that subsidized schools not be excluded from debates on reduced working hours and teaching load: “We don't want to be looked down upon. We must have the same conditions and freedom.”

He also argued that any educational reform must include the subsidized sector: “We are talking about reducing working hours and decreasing the teaching load, and this must be equated with public schools. The quality of subsidized education must be improved, and we shouldn't only think about public schools.”
