MÁS calls for maritime transport costs to be passed on to Balearic exports
Eco-sovereignists present a text with the aim of diversifying the economy
PalmIn a context of rising import and transport costs due to the war, MÉS per Mallorca has presented a proposal to facilitate the export of Balearic products by sea. The party's spokesperson, Lluís Apesteguia, argued that the cost of shipping containers from the Islands to the Spanish mainland should be reduced to maximize cargo capacity. "It's a measure for economic diversification," he said.
"99% of the containers arriving in the Balearic Islands are loaded, while nearly 70% of those leaving are empty," states the text presented by the eco-sovereignists. "According to market logic, this should result in significantly lower export rates; however, the outbound prices are lower. The non-binding resolution from MÁS, if approved, will urge the Spanish government to reduce the 'excessive and unjustified' maritime transport costs for the Balearic Islands' industry. It will also demand that the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) examine the structure and operation of the market. Furthermore, it proposes that the Balearic Government conduct a study on the logistical costs of maritime transport in the Islands and their impact on the competitiveness of Balearic products abroad. It also requests that a 'sufficient' supply of maritime transport be guaranteed between the commercial ports of the Islands, Barcelona, and Valencia, with early morning arrivals. in both directions of each of the routes.
