MÉS will run in the elections in a "Balearic key": "We will not participate in a state-wide mess"
The eco-sovereigntists extend their hand to the forces of the Islands to the left of the PSIB
PalmaMÉS per Mallorca and Més per Menorca, gathered under the umbrella of Ara Més, avoided answering this Monday whether they are willing to run again in the general elections hand in hand with the state-level left. In a joint press conference, Lluís Apesteguia (MÉS per Mallorca) and Josep Castells (Més per Menorca) warned that they will evaluate any formula "with a Balearic focus". "We will not participate in messes with a state-level focus", remarked Castells.
In this sense, the deputy remarked that they "will not participate in a state coalition" and that they will prioritize at all times the federation between the Majorcan, Minorcan, and Ibizan eco-sovereigntists. However, does this mean that they definitively rule out joining the coalition that the Comuns, Sumar, Más Madrid, and IU will present on October 17th under the name of Broad Front? When asked about the matter, they did not make it clear. However, the two spokespeople did show themselves willing to reach agreements with parties to the left of the PSOE in the Islands to have "a Balearic voice in Madrid". "If within the Islands they are willing, they are the correspondents of the Broad Front and they want us to study a formula, we will do it with that condition," continued Castells.
"The left-wing eco-sovereigntists of the Islands will have their representation guaranteed in the contest," added Apesteguia. In the same sense, he claimed the federation of Ara Més: "We are talking about a new political subject, not a coalition". Thus, he warned that "it will be Ara Més that will decide the formula for how we will run in the elections".
MÉS per Mallorca obtained its first deputy in history in 2023 when Vicenç Vidal entered Congress through a coalition with Sumar, Yolanda Díaz's platform. However, at this moment, this path presents some difficulties. The assembly of MÉS per Mallorca has debated on several occasions the convenience of remaining within the Sumar group in Congress due to the difficulties of making themselves heard in the coalition. Although the option to remain within the parliamentary group finally won, Vidal's role has received internal criticism and the leadership has made it clear that they will not join a similar formula again without prior negotiation.
However, with Díaz's step aside, Broad Front still has many questions to answer. Among them, who will be the head of the list. This Monday there will be a second, broader meeting with the parties that are part of the parliamentary group in Congress and a subsequent public appearance.
