Rain and storms activate the orange alert in Mallorca

PalmaJust a few days ago, Mallorca was on orange alert for temperatures that could reach 39 degrees. This Sunday, however, the island faces a completely different situation: the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated an orange alert for rain and storms, while the 112 Emergency service has raised the Meteobal plan alert to severity index 1 (IG-1).

The alert affects all of Mallorca, where up to 40 liters per square meter can accumulate in one hour until 6 p.m. Furthermore, it is not ruled out that the storms may be accompanied by hail. In Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, the risk is yellow level for both precipitation and, in the case of the two smaller islands, for coastal phenomena.

The first rainfall arrived around eight in the morning in the Serra de Tramuntana. In Sóller, for example, 6.7 liters per square meter were recorded, 2.5 of which fell in just ten minutes.

Given this situation, 112 recommends taking extreme precautions, avoiding unnecessary travel, and moderating speed on the road. It also advises not to enter basements or garages if they flood and to secure doors, windows, and objects that water could carry away.

The change in weather comes after a week marked by intense heat. Mallorca had been on orange alert for maximum temperatures of up to 39 degrees, in an episode that also raised the risk of forest fires to the maximum in a large part of the island.
