PalmaThe Government will meet starting next week with the economic sectors of the Balearic Islands. It proposes adopting measures to deal with the escalation of inflation, especially to compensate for the fuel price hikes. The Balearic Business Federation of Transport (FEBT) warned this Friday that the average 8% increase applied this October by the main shipping companies to the fuel surcharge will make the products arriving in the Balearics more expensive.

The first vice-president and spokesperson for the Government, Antoni Costa, announced this at a press conference after the Governing Council. "The idea, right now, is to listen to what impact the inflation crisis is causing on the economic sectors of the Balearic Islands," he said. Regarding the specific measures to be applied, Costa said that "it will be seen which ones can be adopted and in what terms".

In the month of April, the Government approved dedicating 160 million euros to aid for the rise in prices as a consequence of the war in Ukraine. On the other hand, Costa said that they will study the decree to alleviate the prices of petrol and diesel that the Council of Ministers approved in the month of September, which is now pending validation in the Congress of Deputies. Petrol prices are approaching two euros per litre in the Islands, and the trend is for them to continue increasing.

Costa will try to push forward the budgets

On the other hand, Costa has also expressed his willingness to move forward with the budget, despite the context of the electoral campaign for the general elections on November 29th. Thus, he has announced that the spending ceiling –the step prior to the preparation of the accounts– will be registered before November 1st. "We have not started the negotiations, although the intention is for the budget to be approved in due time and form," he said regarding Vox.
