The judge releases the driver who fatally ran over a tourist in Capdepera

The young man, 21 years old, assures that he fell asleep at the wheel after having consumed alcohol and will have to hand over his passport and driving license while the investigation continues

CapdeperaThe judge has released provisionally the 21-year-old youth arrested for the fatal hit-and-run of a tourist this Sunday on the road connecting Cala Mesquida with Capdepera. He is being investigated for alleged reckless homicide, a crime against road safety, and another of abandoning the scene of the accident.

Despite the provisional release, the magistrate has revoked his driving license and passport, prohibited him from leaving the country, and ordered him to appear before the court every two weeks while the investigation progresses.

During his court statement, the young man, of Spanish nationality and an employee at a local hotel during the tourist season, admitted to having consumed alcohol the previous night. He also stated that, at the time of the accident, he fell asleep at the wheel.

According to his account, after the impact, he continued driving to the hotel where he works, located just over half a kilometer away, where he alerted a colleague. Subsequently, he returned to the scene and called the emergency services.

The hit-and-run occurred on Sunday around seven in the morning. The victim, a tourist staying at a hotel in Cala Mesquida, had gone out for a run when he was struck by the vehicle. Civil Guard officers located the abandoned car shortly after, with damage consistent with the accident, and arrested the driver hours later. The alcohol test showed a positive result of 0.62 milligrams of alcohol per liter of exhaled air.
