Beware of euphoria: we are saturated

PalmaMembers of the Government and Llorenç Galmés's team at the Consell de Mallorca congratulated themselves on having unblocked the reduction of vehicles. It is not a harmless measure. It will have some effect. But we must recommend our leaders not to get carried away by euphoria. Because the saturation we suffer from is so enormous that thinking that a single action will serve for much is to be naive in the best of cases.

The population has grown uncontrollably, and with it the car park. And so have the villas in the countryside, many for rent to tourists. And, therefore, the journeys everywhere. And the arrivals of planes and goods have increased and you can't even walk in the weekly markets in the villages.

Nor can you walk through Palma without feeling that you live in a human flood eating ice cream compulsively, let alone getting on a bus through the center without the driver making a face at you because it doesn't open. And it doesn't open because no one else fits. Also in emergencies or specialist appointments, the health service is running out of breath.

Therefore, you live with the euphoria of having taken the only concrete measure to counter saturation. The rest has been nothing more than legalizing rustic houses (some will be rented to foreigners no matter how much the law prohibits it), failing in the pursuit of illegal tourist rentals, and trying to save the irregular houses on the pavement too (even though the law has not yet reached Parliament). Analysis and declarations have not been lacking, but measures, one. That said, it must be acknowledged that Prohens has done more than the left. If it were a football result, it would be 1-0.
