Electoral frauds
Following the corresponding instructions from their Madrid-based party leaders, Vox in the Balearic Islands and part of the PP's orbit are attempting to cast a shadow of suspicion of electoral fraud over the November 29th elections. Predictably, this disinformation campaign will increase as the election dates approach, and the leaders of the PP and Vox have made the solidity of their arguments clear. Feijóo: “I was president of Correos and I do not trust the executives of Correos”. Abascal: “We already know that these people [Pedro Sánchez and the socialists] are capable of anything”. Even when it comes to spreading lies, Feijóo cannot avoid once again demonstrating his exhausting mediocrity, and Abascal, his laziness.
The most serious thing so far has been the Supreme Court's decision (the 'good court' of the Spanish right, in contrast to the Constitutional Court, which for them has become the 'bad court' ever since they no longer have a majority) to leave without the right to vote the 163,020 descendants of exiles who had been nationalized by application of the eighth additional provision of the Spanish government's democratic memory law (the one with which Marga Prohens excused herself to repeal the historical memory law of the Balearic Islands, obeying Vox's orders). The fact is extremely serious because it implies a flagrant violation, perpetrated from a high court of the State, against the primary right of every democracy, the most basic and essential one, which is the right to vote. The democratic memory law came into force in October 2022, so these people had already voted with full legitimacy in the 2023 elections (municipal, regional, and general) and in the 2024 ones (European). Probably some, or many, of them voted for the PP or Vox. Now they will not be able to do so, because the Supreme Court (and also Vox and the far-right entity Iustitia Europa) suspects that they are all 'sanchistas'.
The PP had never been concerned about any alleged electoral fraud, and if it is doing so now, it is for the same reason that the PP has done everything for some years now: because Vox demands that it do so. Also weighing in is the uninterrupted imitation of Trumpism that the Spanish nationalist right mimics at every step. Trump went so far as to instigate the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, with the idea that the election had been "stolen" from him, and now he is trying to sell the same fallacy in the face of the more than possible electoral defeat he may suffer in the November 3 midterm elections. So if Trump does it, and Milei imitates him, Feijóo and Abascal do not want to be left behind. And neither do Prohens and Cañadas.
In any case, it is curious that they are trying to sell this damaged goods in a democracy like the Spanish one, where so many things fail but not, precisely, the voting mechanisms. There have been cases of attempted electoral fraud, but they have been scarce and isolated. If we talk about Mallorca, or the Balearic Islands, we have to go back to the eighties, when in Sa Pobla dead people voted and the then mayor Jaume Font was convicted for this reason. Or at the end of the nineties, when, in the context of the so-called Mapau case, a clumsy attempt was made to register Latin American descendants of Mallorcans to make them vote in Formentera (here the justice system acted as it should and did not find any crime in the maneuvers of the investigated individuals, among whom was the then president Matas). Yes: the few times there have been attempts at electoral fraud in Mallorca, they have been carried out by characters so mediocre that nobody thinks about them or remembers them anymore.
