Emaya: the unsustainable management of water

PalmaThe Balearic people have begun to become aware of a fact that experts and entities had announced: the economic model based on increasing accommodation capacity was not unlimited. Now, when the consequences are already impossible to ignore, considerable collective concern has been created.

But in addition to what we touch with our hands, there are also those elements that we cannot appreciate so easily. And, without a doubt, water is the most forceful example. In the Islands, there is not enough of it. In the time of Jaume Matas, far from any attempt to rethink anything, the idea of 'manufacturing' water gained traction. Sure, what a great idea. It is a pity that to do so, you skyrocket CO2 emissions with desalination plants and the economic expense that we all end up paying.

In Palma, the situation is delicate. There is no water to build the thousands of apartments with which developers rub their hands because, under the pretext of a lack of housing, they will become richer. And what has occurred to Emaya? To process a plan known as the sustainable water management plan, which enshrines what this company has been doing for years: plundering the resource, putting aquifers at risk (some like the one in Sant Jordi with extractions of more than 100%), and on top of that, inventing figures to be able to justify the unjustifiable.

It is simple. Since we will not have more desalination plants in the short term, there are nerves. The water factory is not enough. What have they done? They have manufactured it on paper. They have reduced the estimate of consumption per person, without any study, to be able to say that we can accommodate 10,000 more apartments. An irresponsibility from managers who accumulate many of them. For a public company with a historic record of political appointees, it is already serious to entrust it with the supply. But they cannot touch the planning.
