This is how the illegal rental party is made in Mallorca
The idea of tourist rental emerged with a discourse of collaborative economy that would allow the democratization of income. In validating it, I don't know who the naive leftist was who ignored the voracity of man and capitalism. Over time, housing has been transformed into a financial asset, a professionalized business in which large conglomerates, vulture funds, and any greedy person has sunk their claws.
The result of the operation is undeniable: the supply of housing to live in has decreased (prices are rising), residents have been expelled from neighborhoods turned into tourist spaces, and an unequal and unbeatable competition for locals has been established, because the tourist pays more for less time.
While in the rest of the Islands tourist rental did not find any regulation to stop it, Palma does have a law to limit it. If it hadn't been like that, the problem would be even more serious. And that's saying a lot when we've normalized people living in caravans, shacks, or directly under a bridge. In practice, the illegal offer runs rampant with opaque ads that appear on foreign websites and disappear. They are difficult to track. An inspector from the Consell de Mallorca has stated to Anna Mascaró for ARA Balears that it is "impossible" to put an end to the business that operates outside the system. The market moves much faster than the Administration and "very many sanctions expire".
If it is difficult to prove fraud and fines are not collected, institutions are obliged to act. The management of such a serious and structural problem should fall to the Government and not be transferred to the Councils. No one will believe the discourse of coordination between bodies, because it does not exist. The Executive should provide the necessary means, act with force, and dictate ambitious policies to the island governors. And effective ones. It cannot continue to ignore the failure, in this case, more visible of the Consell de Mallorca. But what can we expect from those who, advocating for the free market, refuse to declare tense areas or cap rental prices.
We need exemplary fines and for illegal tourist rentals to also benefit from the administrative streamlining that the PP promotes so much and does not reach where it really matters. Regulation is lax; political action, ineffective; and people literally have nowhere to live.
