Cort maintains financial aid for Pilar, the 65-year-old woman who lived in her car
The City Council will exceptionally maintain the aid so that he/she can stay in a pension during the month of September and plans to extend it also to October
PalmaThe Palma City Council claims it has been monitoring the situation of Pilar López, the 65-year-old woman who, after losing her home, has ended up sleeping in her car. According to the Council, Pilar has been receiving attention from municipal Social Services intermittently since 2019.
The City Council explains that, after the eviction was carried out in June 2026, it processed financial aid to cover their accommodation in a guesthouse and referred them to the Social Services First Response Team (EPASS). It also points out that, over the last few years, social, technical, and legal advisory actions have been carried out, as well as vulnerability reports and support in the renewal and negotiation of social rental contracts.
Social worker
According to the municipal version, during July, the social worker carried out a continuous follow-up of the case given the end of the aid for staying in a pension, which reached the maximum amount provided for in the catalog on July 22. During this period, the City Council states, several alternatives were proposed to prevent the woman from ending up on the street.
Among the options that, according to Cort, were offered to her were the referral to the Llar resource, with the goal of subsequent access to a residence; a shelter and the CRAC day service, in addition to other resources. The City Council assures that initially the user rejected these alternatives.
In her vehicle
On July 22, once the maximum amount of the pension subsidy was exhausted, Pilar became homeless and decided to stay in her vehicle. According to the City Council, she rejected the accommodation alternatives that had been offered to her at that time. The social worker, Cort adds, subsequently maintained several telephone contacts with her.
On July 30, still according to the municipal version, the woman contacted the social worker again and accepted the referral to the Llar resource. The referral was formalized the next day and during August the corresponding assessment was carried out, with a favorable result. Pilar was added to the waiting list for a center for autonomous people.
The center is under construction
The center, however, is under construction, so access to a place will not be immediate. Faced with this situation, the City Council assures that it has decided to exceptionally maintain the pension aid, even though it had already exceeded the maximum amount established in the catalog.
Thus, Cort has authorized the continuation of the aid during September and plans to maintain it also during October, while waiting for a residence place to become available.
The municipal version comes after Pilar recounted at the plenary session that she had lost her home on Joan Crespí street, that she had lived for years renting, and that, after going through various accommodations, she had ended up sleeping in her car during the months of July and August.
