How was Ferran Montero, according to his mother: “He was very responsible: the mothers of his classmates would ask him if they had been given homework”

PalmaEvery morning, while he religiously drank his daily Cola-Cao, he would watch Club Súper 3, of which he was a member. At home, they still keep his membership card. Since he has two older siblings, until the seventh month of pregnancy, his mother thought he would be a girl –a wish that was not fulfilled because a few years later another boy arrived. The first years were not easy: “Until he was two years old, he was often sick, with problems with mucus, his chest, and his ears. At two years old, they had to operate on his adenoids and everything started to get better.” So says Ana Sitges, the mother of the politician Ferran Montero, candidate for mayor of Manacor for MÉS per Manacor.

At school, he was a very responsible boy. Aina says that she never had to ask him if he had homework or not. In fact, he was so committed to school that the mothers of the other children would call him to find out what homework they had or if there was an exam. “They would call the landline at home and ask me if I knew if they had tasks to do at home. Since I didn’t know, I would pass them on to Ferran, who would clarify everything for them.” At school, he was a “canteen boy,” and with that, he was more problematic, “a bit picky”: “He didn’t like practically anything, but at least with ketchup he would eat something… he put ketchup on everything!” Luckily, over the years, that has changed. “There is one dish he loves: the stuffed Christmas soup. I can make it all year round!”, says Aina.

The first years of his life, Ferran grew up in an apartment in Portocristo. However, for about twenty years, the family has lived in the countryside. His grandfather had sheep and, as a child, “Ferran would run after them through the field.” There was also a ram, which luckily “was tame.” His grandfather would be amazed at how crazy Ferran was about the ram and the sheep… “He would always say: ‘If you don’t discipline this boy, he’s going to get hurt!’”.

From the age of five, he did theater and music, a hobby he has also continued as an adult. His mother especially remembers the years on stage: “It was a wonder to see him.” At six years old, he began to play an instrument: first, a small guitarró, a type of guitar for a six or seven-year-old boy, which his mother still keeps like “a treasure.” A little later, he left the guitar and started with the piano. Music ended up being so important in Ferran’s life that he took the entrance exams for the Conservatory and ended up studying for a degree in Music Pedagogy. On the other hand, with sports, there was no way. He tried a season of tennis, but “he lasted two days.”

Aina defines Ferran as a person who is “very decisive and correct.” With the elderly, he has always been very polite. “Sometimes he seemed like an old man in a small child’s body,” his mother declares. She also says that they are alike in some ways: “When we want to say something important, we start a conversation about another topic. When he told me he was going to run for mayor, he started talking about a friend who was pregnant. I looked at him and said: ‘And why are you telling me this now if that’s not what you want to say?’ I know him because I do the same thing.”

Thus, she also says of him that he is a very formal person and “a friend to his friends, but for real, he will never let anyone down”; a person without malice who makes her worry: “When it was made public that he would be number 1 on the ticket and I looked at the comments on Facebook… they hurt me a lot. That has me a bit scared.” Whatever happens, Aina is full of pride: “Ferran is a sharp boy, who baked pizzas for three years at the Drach Caves, who is a good person and who takes care of the four sheep we still have when we go on trips. With the plants, though, he is a bit more scatterbrained.”
