Jaime Martínez invites Felipe VI to the 800th anniversary of the conquest of Jaume I: "He is also the king of Mallorca"

PalmaThe mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, has invited King Felipe VI to the commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the conquest of Mallorca by Jaume I, which will take place in 2029. The monarch held meetings with the main authorities of the Balearic Islands this Friday at the Almudaina Palace in Palma. As explained in statements to the media, the mayor took advantage of the meeting to extend the invitation to the monarch. "He is also the king of Mallorca", he justified.

As explained, on December 31st the Festa de l'Estendard will be celebrated, the oldest in Europe, commemorating the entry of Jaume I's troops into Palma. However, Martínez has not clarified whether Felipe VI has accepted his invitation. "There are two years left and we will do everything possible for him to be able to be there," he said. The mayor also explained to the king the actions promoted by the City Council, including a shock plan to promote the construction of more than 1,000 homes in Palma that will be started or tendered by 2027, as well as the demographic growth situation of the city, where about 5,000 people register each year, which requires planning Palma in the medium and long term.

For his part, the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, has committed to the king to limit vehicle entry to the island from next summer. "I have announced to him that it will come into effect from next summer," he assured: "It is a brave, decisive measure, and the main containment measure that we have promoted throughout this legislature within the competencies of our institution".
