PalmJaume Obrador (Cas Concos, 1940-Muro, 2025), former councillor for the Socialist Party of Mallorca (PSM) in Palma City Council in 1979, passed away this Friday at the age of 85. The general coordinator of MÉS for Mallorca, Lluís Apesteguia, said goodbye in a message published on his social media account X.

"Jaume Obrador, a PSM councilor in Palma in 1979, has left us. He was responsible for culture in that first council after the dictatorship," he wrote.

The eco-sovereignty activist also remembered Obrador as "a tireless activist for justice, freedom, and human rights in Mallorca and around the world." "Have a safe journey, faithful warrior," he said.

"A historic figure linked to the neighborhood struggle"

The Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Palma highlighted Obrador as "a historic figure linked to neighborhood struggles, the achievement of rights and freedoms, democratic city councils, and international solidarity." In a statement, the organization expressed its condolences for the former politician's death and emphasized that his career "cannot be summarized in a few lines."

Thus, they recalled that as a neighborhood leader, he witnessed the birth of neighborhood associations, as first councilor, and as coordinator of the technical team that launched Sociocultural Services, "he remained faithful to his commitment to truly promoting Citizen Participation and imbuing it with meaning." "He brought the name of the neighborhood movement to the international stage through his solidarity with the creation of the NGO Neighbors Without Borders and his hard work in the Great Lakes Region, especially in Burundi, Tanzania, and the Congo," they emphasized.

"To say Jaume Obrador is to name a universe of honesty, perseverance, coherence, and solidarity," he said.
