PalmaMÉS per Mallorca has accused Llorenç Galmés's government of "dismantling environmental guarantees" to facilitate the arrival of waste from Ibiza to Mallorca. The eco-sovereignist party maintains that the modification of the conditions initially foreseen for the transfer confirms that the Council is adapting the rules to the project's needs, instead of prioritizing the island's environmental interests.

The criticism comes after this newspaper revealed that the Consell de Mallorca has changed the conditions foreseen for waste to arrive at Son Reus in bulk. According to MÉS, this decision implies a reduction in the environmental requirements associated with the operation and demonstrates that the PP modifies the requirements as technical and logistical difficulties arise.

“It is a scandal. The PP presented this operation as an exemplary action and now we discover that, in order to carry it out, it has to eliminate obstacles and make environmental requirements more flexible. When reality does not fit with propaganda, the PP modifies the rules of the game,” stated the spokesperson for MÉS on the Consell de Mallorca, Catalina Inés Perelló.

Criticism of the PP's management

For MÉS, the arrival of waste from Ibiza to Mallorca does not respond to an environmental need, but to the "incapacity" of the PP to correctly plan waste management in Ibiza. The party considers it especially serious that, given the problems raised by the project, the Council has not reviewed its position and has opted, according to their denunciation, to soften the environmental conditions.

The eco-sovereignists also accuse Galmés and the island councilor Pedro Bestard of having gone from promising benefits for Mallorca to defending an operation that, according to MÉS, is marked by "opacity, improvisation, and the constant lowering of environmental guarantees."

The risk of turning Mallorca into a destination for waste

MÉS recalls that for months it has been warning of the risk that this operation could open the door to turning Mallorca into the usual destination for waste from the rest of the Archipelago. According to the party, the transfer contradicts the principles of proximity and waste reduction, and consolidates a model that distances the responsibility for management from where the waste is generated.

“When environmental guarantees bother the PP's plans, what the PP does is lower them,” criticized Perelló. The MÉS spokesperson argues that the Council should demand more responsible management in Ibiza and not assume the consequences in Mallorca of a planning that, according to the party, is late and poorly done.
