PalmaThe plenary session of the Palma City Council has definitively approved this Thursday the modification of the General Plan to extend the prohibition of new tourist rental places. The modification had the favorable vote, although with criticism, from MÉS and the PSIB.

The councilor for Urban Planning has underlined that the intention of the reform of the General Plan is to reinforce residential use and protect citizens' "access to housing".

Fidalgo has pointed out that the current system has not been able to contain the expansion of the phenomenon or its effects on the residential market, while criticizing that the expansion of this modality between 2015 and 2023 reduced the availability of residential uses and caused price increases.

From MÉS per Palma, councilor Miquel Àngel Contreras, despite the favorable vote, has accused the PP of "arriving late," because in recent years it always voted against any limitation. "When we said that tourist rentals were expelling residents, they called us radicals," he indicated.

PSIB councilor Pepe Martínez has also accused the government team of "arriving late." The socialist has criticized the PP's inconsistency in extending the prohibition of tourist rental places while allowing the creation of places in BIC buildings.

Vox spokesperson Fulgencio Coll has justified his group's lack of support for the measure and has described it as an attempt to launder the housing problem. Coll has regretted that illegal tourist rentals have not been pursued harshly.
