PalmaThe President of the Government, Marga Prohens, has applauded the calling of early general elections on November 29th and has expressed her hope that the polls will put an end to a Spanish government that, as she has asserted, "has abandoned the Balearic Islands". "Finally!", she wrote on her X account after the President of the state executive, Pedro Sánchez, announced the early elections in an institutional statement. "The countdown begins for change to reach Spain", she declared.

Prohens has asserted that the elections are coming after "three years of a rudderless legislature" and a government that "has dedicated itself to resisting instead of governing and solving the citizens' problems". She has also accused the state executive of being "cornered by corruption". The president has also criticized Sánchez's management of territorial and migratory issues. She stated that the Spanish government "has played and will play until the last moment with the confrontation between Spaniards, the raising of walls, radicalism, and polarization" and that, even, "it has renounced defending our borders and the country's territorial integrity".

"It has abandoned the Balearic Islands"

In a Balearic context, Prohens has accused Sánchez's executive of having "abandoned the Balearics" during the term. According to the president, the Spanish government "has not listened to a single demand" from the Islands to achieve better financing and has left issues such as the special regime for the Balearics and road and rail investments "up in the air".

She has also questioned the management of the airports and has accused the Spanish government of having maintained an airport policy "against the citizens". In fact, the bill for airport co-management by MÉS per Mallorca, which was just beginning to be processed in Congress, will lapse as a consequence of the early election. "In the end, when there was no other way out, the Spanish people will have the final say to decide the future of Spain," stated Prohens, who pointed out that now "the countdown begins for change to arrive in Spain" with a government led by the Popular Party's Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

"The PSIB is not united"

For his part, the PP spokesperson in Parliament, Sebastià Sagreras, has avoided giving details about who will lead the party's list to Congress. In 2023 it was José Vicente Marí Bosó, current deputy spokesperson for the PP parliamentary group in Congress. However, Sagreras did lash out at the PSIB. "It is not united," he asserted, and said he has information that some of the socialist officials "who will be ousted" in Madrid, such as the Secretary of State for Security, Aina Calvo, could run in the primaries. "We have heard that within the PSIB there is elbowing, Aina Calvo could dispute the candidacy," he said.

Galmés: "the worst government in democratic history"

In the same vein, the president of the Council of Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, has spoken out, expressing his pleasure that Sánchez has called elections and stating that "at last he has surrendered and listened to the will of the citizens of Spain." The Popular Party leader described the state executive as "the worst government in democratic history" and accused it of having been left in the minority, of not having been capable of approving the general state budget, and of being "stained by corruption cases."

Galmés also reproached the Spanish government for the lack of response to the arrival of migrants in both Ceuta and the Balearic Islands. "Its inaction and its inability to govern have translated into an aggravation of the problems for the people of Mallorca during these last few years," he asserted.

The island president trusts that the elections will allow for "changing the model to a better one" and has placed among the main demands for Mallorca a new road agreement, a new railway agreement, and a new financing system. Likewise, he has demanded "to stop this migratory invasion that so affects the citizens of this land."
